How to break up surfaces for imported object?

Okay guys. I just can't figure this out. I mostly model stuff in 3ds Max but no matter which way I export I always end up with some missing textures/surfaces. I don't mind re-doing the texturing in Daz...but most of the time it just imports the model as one "surface". Is there a way, IN DAZ, to split a model up into smaller parts that can each have a surface applied to them?
I don't really care about textures, as most of the things I model just get a shader, but right now I'm stuck having to apply one shader to a whole object instead of being able to apply different shaders to each part of it.

perfect example. download an OBJ from the internet. it imports as one object with no separate pieces and no way to apply different shaders for the blade, hilt, handle, etc...
Nevermind. Found answer here:
