They all try to accomplish the same thing, but not necessarily in the same way, and to varying degrees of success. If you're comfortable fiddling with parameters, the forums contain enough information to create realistic looking skin and control certain variables (gloss, SSS, etc). You might find it preferable, though, to start from someone else's base, and tweak from there. My preference is for Beautiful Skin Iray, but I find the settings too glossy for most of my renders, so I make some minor tweaks after applying the shader. The proof will be in the sample renders.

I also have some questions about the skin shaders. There are some called SSS and some AoA. (I think I have the abbreviations right.) So, are they for iray or for 3DDelight? There are some labelled for different body parts. When are you suppose to use those. I know there are some labelled iRAy and 3dDream.

I think the uberShaders are for 3DL, but I'm not positive.

    Thanks.

Uber can be either omnifreaker UberSurface or the Iray Uber shader...so that isn't really enough to go on.

AoA is 3Delight.  All of Omnifreakers (UberSurface, UberSurface 2, HumanSurface) are 3Delight.

Can you give some more specific examples?

I have seen the UberSurface and the HumanSurface at the top of the Surface panel. I have also seen iray as part of the name for other shaders. If it didn't say iray, then I was assume, that it was 3Delight. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think I iray shaders have some metallic settings. Or can 3Delight have them too. All the iray shaders that I've seen have some blue boxes in some of the parameters.

I looked for some of the other icons, but I couldn't find them, except for these....

Not sure when I use these.

When I find some of the other ones, I'll come back.

IMO skin shaders account for only about 10% of how a charcter looks in the final render, and lighting for the rest of the 90%. So get yourself a few high quality skin textures and shaders and direct your efforts towards lighting scenes. There is way too much talk about shaders and tweeking skin shaders IMO when lighting will be the determining factor in how they actually look when rendered.
