Iray - 2GB VRAM - Could it work?
in The Commons
I need iray to render the following scene:
V7 male and V7 feamle with skin textures and non fancy clothes. No hair (I can do it in post). 3 lights and dome.
I don't know how much video ram this takes up, so I ask could 2GB work and how could I tell the total VRAM size of my scene?

Comments
When I load both & render according to GPU- Z I am using 2677 GB so I don't think both will fit although you could perhaps reduce texture sizes to help but Its probably quicker to render V7 then do M7 & compile it in photoshop while you are doing the hair
You can only check your vram when you try the render, I don't know of a way to know before you start - Here is a link to download GPu-Z (Its free)

Thank you! That is exactly what I needed to know.
Bear in mind that Iray will render w/ the CPU if the scene is too large for the card. It will be longer than a GPU render, but will still work. You didn't specifiy your video card, but just in case, remember that Iray on the GPU requires a CUDA enabled Nvidia card.
Yeah. CPU is slower, but hey, it's not bad at all.
It may seem slow compared to a simple 3DL render, but try something funky, like meshlights and fog or whatnot, and the Iray starts seeming like a good deal.
What about using Reality/Luxrender?
It is turbo fast, works with every CPU/GPU and in OpenCL mode it shares VRAM and normal RAM. So even if your scene does not fit into VRAM, you still benefit of combined CPU and GPU rendering. And Luxrender is also a PB render engine, so the results are very similar to Iray.
This image was rendered in about 30 minutes in with Reality/Lux in OpenCL mode (Intel Core i7 3770, 16 GB Ram, AMD R9 270x with 2GB VRAM).
Oh, and with Reality, you don´t have to be a rocket scientist to understand the shader system with those millions of options and sliders. I tried it once and gave up. Reality´s material system is easy and simple, but with impressive results.
@Fastbike1, thanks I knew that part :). I was using an ancient GTS 450 with 1GB vram. I knew I needed an upgrade but was stretched ultra thin on cash. My renders are usually small, and while I knew the gpu-z trick for showing vram usage, I couldn't load my whole scene into my gpu to see my max vram usage. So i ordered a GT 740 which is about double the speed of my GTS 450 with mor vram.
@Timmins.William, I agree.
@XoechZ, I've experimented with luxrender but could never achieved the same level of realism iray came to offer. I can't say exactly what it was. There's still plenty of reading and trial and error for me in iray though.
