After the War question...

In the IRAY version, can much of it be hidden/made invisible? Specifically, I really like the look of the water/river and the river wall, and was curious whether I can make everything else invisible so I can JUST use the river/water and the river wall.

I imagine you could just remove the buildings if you'd like. They appears to be separate props at least.

  • FYI, you can hide the buildings, but not the rubble, unless you don't also mind hiding the riverwall and ground.  The rubble, river wall and ground are all built into the base from what I can tell.  Limits my usefulness for shots above the bridges, since I don't do many war scenes, but from the river surface or a little above, you should be fine adding in other elements for background.

One method I've heard a lot about on these forums and only just recently started using, was the geometry editor. Use the geometry selection tool and open the tools settings pane. click on your wall to select it in the scene. Click on "Selection" in the tools settings (which is the last in the list) then right click and create new selection group.

Then go through and select the poly's for the rubble in the scene and right click your group and select add poly's to group.

Once you've gone through and added all the poly's for the rubble to the group, click the eye icon in the tool settings and all the rubble will dissapear!

Remember though, then the scene is closed then reopened, you need to go back into the tool settings and click the eye again as it turns on every time when loading. It takes some time to do but once the poly's are added to a group and the scene saved, the group is saved as well so it's just a matter of remembering to turn it off.

Is the rubble a separate item under the surfaces tab? If so could you not simply make it invisible (ie change the opacity to zero), I would be surprised if the rest of the road was not actually there as geometry. I would be interested in hearing if this is possible, as I am thinking about this set, but would also like to know if it can be made less "destroyed" looking.

Okay, here's the good news.  I was half asleep when I tried it earlier and turned off a render to go back in and check it (was up about 4 hours earlier then normal).  Yes, you can turn them off using this method.

Can you do this in the Iray version tho? I haven't been able to figure out "opacity" in Iray settings - with normal 3delight mats, you can turn hte "opacity" down to 0% and that makes it invisible (in cases where you can't do it in the scene tab with the eye icon). But with Iray settings the only "opacity" i can find in surfaces is "cutout opacity" and that doesn't seem to do the same thing

What I do if I need to have the surfaces invisible in Iray is use the DS default shader to those surfaces and set Opacity to 0.

There are two ways (I know of) to make an iRay Uber surface invisible.

    1) Change Cutout Opacity to zero.

    2) Set Refraction Weight and Refraction Index to 1.0

Neither is that obvious (particularly nr 2)

What Havos said is what works.  I usually just search for opac and Cutout Opacity comes up.  I'm using IRAY almost exclusively the past few weeks and still quite new to it myself.

    Edited for hopefully clarity.

Dang, I didn't even think of that. That's usually the first thing I look for (seperate surface material to make transparent) or look for the eye icon in the layout tree. I assumed this was already looked for... doh.
