Iray, Iray+, Iray server, Daz 4.9 improvment with iray etc…

I’ve read that many enthousist users who have tried the upcoming Daz Studio 4.9 say that the iray renders look better. I don’t have the chance to test 4.9 by myself.

Could you please be more specific?

More of this, Nvidia seems to go further with the Iray technology. The company just announced 2 new products: iray+ and iray server. Iray+ is an add on to major 3D programs (Max atm and soon maya and then others). If iray is free, the iray+ version is not: 300USD/year. The iray server will come out later next year, making the possibility to create some kind of server/farm render available through a net.

Is there any plan for daz to implement those things?

  • so, can anyone tell if 4.9 iray can really render better (a bit?) than 4.8?

I'm not sure if I have noticed better renders but there was a fairly big adjustment made to surfaces that directly impacts how characters look. So yes it is more realistic if that is the primary goal. Not entirely sure what the difference is between Iray and Iray+ other than it sounds as if it has been better integrated with Max.

I would guess that there is some plan to implement something like the server/farm based on the cloud tab in advanced render settings. I had not looked in a while but I noticed when I looked today that it has more options there though of course we don't have a server or accounts for it.

For your question regarding 4.8 vs 4.9: There are some change notices for the 4.9 beta, and they include a couple of mentions of improvements and bug fixes, including the volumetrics (which Iray in 4.8 does only a passable job with to begin with). You'll have to slog through the 4.9 beta threads to catch any of the comparison renders.

As for Iray+: that would depend on how D|S implements the plug-in. If there's a way to switch to Iray+, it's not obvious from the D|S interface.
