Pet peeves with Content files

I have two major pet peeves with content files.  One is RSR files instead of PNG files for thumbnails and not saying who the item is for?   and it is frustrating when it is combined.  I cannot see what the thumbnail is and I have no clue who it is for because the name is too vague.

edit: figured out how to convert RSR into PNG, but still confused on the confusing file names.

RSR files are old...they've not really been included for years.  And that was mostly in Poser specific content.

I look through my runtime and found an example of vague names.   Here is Cherry blossom hair. Just looking at it I cannot tell whose hair it is.  There are other examples but why call it just Cherry blossom hair instead of Cherry Blossom hair for blah blah blah.  I can probably look it up but then I have a lot of content and I want to know who it is for and if I can convert it to a scene that I need it for.

That particular era of content creation has always driven me nuts...it seems a lot of content from the late V3/early V4 era is particularly prone to that (although there's a bunch that is strictly V4 era, too).

My main peeve is folders popping up where they should not, aka not being named properly ...

my pet peeve is when downloading free (or paid) stuff from other sites and they don't bother putting anything in folders at all. You open the zip and have a folder with said product name and inside that folder is just a bunch of vaguely named cr2, pz3, obj and other files.

So then I need to create a runtime folder, and other sub folders as I try to figure out where everything goes. Then re-zip it for my archives.

No peeves here. I've learned to live with it.

Probably the best approach.  Save your sanity for when you really need it!

While on the whole I've learned to live with the world as it is, not marking materials as Iray/3DL has me foaming at the mouth!

A little thing, sure but it needles me.

I read "Pets Peed on Content Files"... I really should finish my coffee before I browse around here...  I thought they fixed the RSR files... God that was a pain in the asparagus.... on my old Mac, the converter only worked ONE file at a time... No batch conversion.  About two years ago I mentioned it in some thread right after spending a huge amount of time on somes conversions and someone pointed out DAZ was redoing them... Then I went back and DLed a few of the ones I converted from my own backup archives and sure enough they had PNGs... Oh well... Hell, I still have some things with no PNG or RSR... Mostly A3 stuff.

Not marking or denoting if a file is Iray or 3DL is just cruel... How hard is it to just add Iray or 3dl to a name? I get that it's a pain to add that to dozens of files, but it's worse for a customer to have to figure that out.

Over the years I've seen countless confusing and patience sapping oddities, many are concessions to software weirdness, but some just sloppy housekeeping or illogical thinking.

Would it not be simpler to add the DS/poser hierarchy folders as a requirement for vendors, to be checked in QA?

From the looks of things this won't be an issue with DS 4.9 (tags).

No criticism of Karth intended (the UShirt was free) , the image above was done from my tablet with next to no content installed and that was the only example I had where the Iray content hadn't been removed.

carrara can see the .png inside of .rsr

    poser7 can extract the png.
which doesn't help me anymore, since poserpro12 can read all the file types, i've been organizing my mat files in the character folders with their respective outfits, like ds does. P7 can't see pz2 outside of the pose folder.

peeve - .pmd files in daz store stuff.

As someone who regularly adds the word Iray to the end hundreds of product files it isn't hard and it is not too much to ask. That said, there are times when the file name is already on the long side and even 4 little letters can be a bad thing happening.

There is a batch converter for RSR to PNG. You only see RSR only items on content that is VERY old, and never got updated. I think this is the one (windows only):

Actually, I have a pet peeve too. It's the morphs. I don't mind the whole Runtime/libraries thing, in fact, the regular structure is somewhat comforting. The problem is the various morph scripts that are read by cr2 and pz2 files. They could be anywhere. They (Poser pple) could have dictated a Runtime/libraries/Morphs folder, BUT NO! You can't move any of those files without breaking (or fixing) the cr2/pz2 files. My Runtime folder is littered with them.
