OT: Kathryn Loch, writer and member of these forums, passed away Dec. 4 2015

I was saddened to hear that Kathryn Lock passed away December 4, 2015 of an apparent lung embolism. I have posted Kathryn's Obituary and related links to the Book Cover thread she started in the Artist Forum. The link to her Memorial Wall as well as a link to her Funeral Fund have also been posted there. I just wanted to make sure that anyone who has had the opportunity to enjoy chatting with Kathryn, but didn't follow her Book Cover thread, knew of her passing.

Yes, she will be missed both in the New Users Forum, where she was an avid contributor, as well as her own thread.
My condolences to her Family.
She was a great mentor for folks who wanted help with book covers and her thread has a lot of useful information that will always be available to continue helping folks. Kathryn would have loved that. So sorry for her family.
Am absolutely shocked. I followed her book cover thread practically from the beginning, even though I never commented or had the privilege of talking with her. I hope it was sudden for her and that her family can find some comfort in that. My condolences to those who knew and loved her.

She seemed like a decent person, and easy with a kind word of advice. Definitely a loss.
This must have come sudden. While I'm too new here to have any longtime relations with anyone I do remember her efforts in the November New User Contest thread, and as I had a look back at that, I noticed she in early november expressed worry about her father's health...

Yes, it was sudden. Her husband is trying to understand how this could happen with no warning. There has been an autopsy to attempt to discover how this happened. But with possible embolisms, these things aren't always discovered until too late. The lab tests ran should be back sometime early January.
I've known a few people who have died of this, and the common thread among them was that they had recently suffered a broken leg. But it can sometimes be spontaneous. There is some research that says sitting with your legs crossed for extended periods can increase the risk. Heavy long distance travel and stress can also lead to thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. No matter the cause, though, this is quite sad news.

Very shocking to hear. Here one day and gone the next. Hope peace comes to her husband and family during this trying time.
Although the names are almost identical to swedish, it didn't occur to me until now that it's pretty much the same that happened to me 3 years ago when I got a "Saddle Emboli". Basically, a blod clot that sat down like a saddle where the blood vein going to the lungs splits in two to go to both lungs, making the clot blocking the way for the blood to go to the lungs to get oxygen. The day I was taken to hospital I had walked from my living room to the bathroom (less than 10 meters) and then I got stuck sitting on the bathroom floor exhausted, barely able to breath for a long while.
This was caused by a blood clot most likely originating from my leg and the research showed that I have a condition that increases the risk of getting blood clots, especially in the legs. Apparently this condition can be inherited and I likely got it from my father. Just as mentioned above, long travels, especially flights, increases the risk and I was recommended to wear "support stockings" (?) if I was to fly. Examination at the hospital also showed that due to the extra effort my heart had to make to get blood to the lungs, one of its chambers had got enlarged. So a clot can cause indirect problems too.
Worth mentioning is that I'm physically active in my work and except my too large belly I always have excellent values on all tests in the health exams I do every 5 year and I had just done one earlier that year when I got the clot. So it's not something that only happens to lazy people that never excercise, which might be easy to think. In my case I suppose it was a matter of bad luck with my gene pool.
Anyway, I guess what I wanted to say is that this is indeed something that can happen very suddenly and even to perfectly healthy people. Sometimes we just get stuck with a really lousy deal... (and I apologize for any weird english, but I hope it can be understood)
