A bit out of the loop...which is faster GPU for iRay rendering...

...between the Geforce GTX 980 and his GTX 980 TI younger sister?

For this question, I am only considering CUDA rendering...95% iRay and 5% um..."other".  Whatever I get, I'm thinking of getting two of them the same.

I think the TI can come with up to 6 GB of DDR5 memory on board, which may be better for rendering big scenes...or maybe it matters little?  Does anybody have any knowledge or links where I can edumacate myself?

Thanks in advance!

I have 2x980TI's. 6GB Vram should be more than enough. In most cases scenes won't exceed 3GB, but it's always best to have more:). Just make sure your PC has around 32GB system ram. Spooling Iray materials on larger scenes uses lots of system ram.

  • Thanks, Zev0!

My workstation has 64 GB of system RAM so I should be okay.

So now the only question left is whether or not the GTX 980 TI is actually faster than the older GTX 980, and by how much.  I won't be running them in SLI, of course.

I'm looking at a GTX 960 - I know they are lower end cards but a GTX960 would double both cuda and memory compared to my GTX580

Zev, can I ask a quick question? If you play games on that PC, does having two video cards also help run games better if they're *not* SLI (which I assume your two cards are not)?

Nope. Only beneficial in SLI Mode. But with one 980TI alone, I haven't really found the need to hook up SLI yet:) Only reason I don't hook up SLI is because I use Windows Fences to arrange and manage my desktop icons, and when you switch on SLI, it merges icons from two screens onto one, and doesnt set back when disabled. And I am too lazy to reboot everytime to have it reset. So basically, I am too lazy to use SLI:)

I use Fences too!  Haha, small world.  That company, Stardock, makes a game I really like, Galactic Civilizations III.  And they are based less than 10 miles from my old house.  Very small world.

But yes, Zev0 is right on this...2 cards in non-SLI will not improve gaming performance.  You are only using 1 card to drive your game when using a non-SLI configuration.

The real benefit to having 2 cards in non-SLI is for iRay, Octane, and Reality(?) rendering.  And for that, they should NOT be in SLI (If I remember correctly).
