Forest Autum - can I use only segments of it?

Maybe somebody can help me with my forest http://www.daz3d.com/forest-autumn. Its so huge it slows my computer down and I need only part of it. So is there a way to use segments? I use the SR preload scene, I know I can remove trees and other stuff but those are all over the place so they will be missed in the part I use.

Forest Autumn is only a texture set for Forest and/or Forest Superior, so that is the set you need to be asking about regarding useability. I do own Forest (but not Forest Superior), and you are correct in that its is a huge and resource hungry set. As you said, you can hide certain tree types that thins the forest, but I see no easy way of loading just a part of the forest. Note that even when you hide certain parts that reduces the resources at render time, but the geometry is still there, so will still use memory inside of DS. The forest could be sliced into small parts using certain modelers, but I do not know if that would mess up the overall model in some way. How much memory do you have in your box? When I load the SR set DS uses about 1.5 GB, which rises to 4GB when rendering with 3DL. Which renderer are you using?

I just posted this on another thread where someone was having a sluggish camera issue. Check these settings to make sure you are taking advantage of your video resources.

What is your DAZ Studio's Display Optimization settings set to?

    Edit>Preferences>Interface

Play with them, use Better or Best for Display Optimization.

Also, look into your Texture Resources: Performance settings as well.

I have all of the sets, and there is one that allows you to just place in what you want. I'm not sure which it is, but it may be 'Forest Elements.' Without firing up Daz Studio, but looking at the item page, if you watch the last video, I believe the PA shows adding in single items. I think, unfortunately, you have to own all to use it. I know that you can though because I do it all the time, I only add in what I need.

After looking in daz, it is forest elements you would want. I know of no way to just use segments with the forest series, unless you own 'Forest Elements' or doing what you said, removing a few trees here and there, but like you said they are grouped together some way or another, and removing one removes one at another location, which as you've found out could be just about anywhere.. I've attached 2 screen shots of some recent work ive done using 'Forest Elements.' The first is using just one of the grounds and adding in just enough autumn trees to cover the POV as I've indicated with the red arrows. I have not added any of the additional stuff yet, stumps, grass, branches and all the other stuff, which you can with 'Elements.' The last image of Giselle, is a recent piece uploaded to my gallery a few weeks or so ago. I did the same here. The beauty of 'Elements' IS the ability to only add in what you want, even grass. You have access to the individual trees, grass (this helps a lot because we all know what transparencies can do to ones system), in Elements you have the ability to use smaller patches of grass, and can place them where you want) stones, twigs, tree's, or whatever. One can instantly see the genius behind this; I mean you have nothing behind you taking up valuable resouces, nor anywhere outside the POV. And as you know, if you have some good forest backgrounds, you can thin your tree's out even more and rely a little bit on the background to give the appearance of a thicker forest, I did this in both screen shots, but more so in the first. I know very little about the Geometry Editor in DS, maybe that could help you (?), maybe not, or as Havos said; load it into your favorite modeler and rip the uneeded stuff out, otherwise I would pick up 'Forest Elements' sometime (if you have the other products) or as you get them, if you can afford. smiley

I would not recommend using the Geometry editor to slice this. That editor is really more designed for hiding a few faces, or making a few polygons into a new material surface. What you need to be able to do here is take a slice out, and a proper modeller should be able to do that.

Ok Thanks a lot to all of you, there are good ideas I have to try out with a little more time at hand. I have not yet made the step to a modeler programm so that would be a whole new tin of worms, which I will tackle at some time.

@Havos I ususally render in 3dlight I will have to check what it tells me abut the memory use

@nDelphy I have to admit that of yet I never thought about changing the display optimization, but learn something new every day, especiall with DAZ, so thanks for that

@HorusRa I actually own the whole bundle (never have used it til now, but it was on sale some time ago so i went for it) so I have the elements as well, will go have a deeper look into that. The scene with Giselle you have there goes very much into the direction I had in mind so that will probably solve my problem.

    Thanks again

I have separated parts of a big sets and made Prop presets using the Geometry Editor Tool

Thanks Szark, I used that one only to hide smaller proportions, but its worth a try and to save as Prop preset is something to remember

I like the forest sets. I have never understood using one of the whole preset scenes though, I guess mainly because Andrey has soooooo much stuff in there that the camera will never see, and they were an unnecessary resource hog. When I first bought all of them, I first attempted to delete what I didn't need and found all kinds of stuff in there, stuff that just will never be seen by the camera, mostly small stones and low-lying ferns and such. Once I discovered 'Elements' I realized (at least for me) that was the way to go and made more sense all the way around. I found with 'Elements' I still have control of all those items, and can add in what I want, and conform more to my systems resources. Anyway, hope you get your problem resolved.

    Yeah, that's gorgeous.

As a random thought, with a filter or bump map, it'd look amazing as the tapestry in ANOTHER scene. ;)

Thanks a lot Ati and Will. Interesting idea, I have used other renders of mine as pictures or photos but this should work as well, I will remember that idea.

  • Linwelly - It's a beautiful render and I can see what Will means exactly!!!
