is it possible to select individual faces/polygons of geometry in DS

Like you'd do in modeling app of your choice. Example, you have a ground plane, mountain, etc. It is all one texture say stone or grass, and you want to add textures of the opposite type to it in patches. Lets say its all stone but you want to add patches of dirt or grass to it. Is this possible within DS natively?

Yes, with the geometry editor...but more often than not, just selecting a couple of faces to create a new surface isn't going to do a very nice job..it will be square/jagged.  It works best for creating surfaces for whole parts, that are distincly parts, like separating the right and left fingernails into two separate textures or lines of contiguous polys, like the hem of a dress.  If you want to add patches of dirt/snow etc to a ground/rock it's often better to create a new texture map (if it isn't using a tiling map) or an overlay to use in the Layered Image Editor.

Ya I knew it would have straight lines and all, that was always going to be some kind of problem, though I was hoping to half hide the straight edges down in slightly sunken parts of the terrain, but after reviewing the whole concept it just seems too ify, and like you said if any straight lines appear, it ruins the whole effect. I'll have to check into the original texture and see what I can do. By the way, is there any good documentation for the geometry editor? There seems to be so many things one can do with it I notice, but I know of no documentation.

A bunch of threads where Richard has answered have more detailed info than anything else I've seen...I'll see if I can dig up a couple of them.

One of the best ways I've found, though, is to dedicate a couple of hours and just play around with it...the tool functions are pretty self explanatory.  Having a large screen and good mouse helps when using it...

I might be missing something in that case. I see no tool functions, that why I mention documentation. When I click on geometry editor nothing happens, except I believe my cursor changes, though I don't have DS up right now to confirm, but I do know I get nothing else, much less tool functions or any UI.

If you select an item, in the Scene tab, you will have a round, red cursor...then if you right click in the viewport it will bring up a menu of the various functions.  It's also a good idea to flip to wireframe or wireshaded mode to work with it.

aha. ok, yeah I see now. I got the menu options. Makes more sense now with that on the screen. Cool. Thanks mjc
