can you achieve a clothing "splitting" effect?

Is 2 questions here really:
1: is it possible to cut things apart like in half and such like clothing or props or anything?
2: I am doing a sword fight image where a woman has her top cut open by a guy with a sword and exposing her bra. I am after a ripped split clothing effect here. Is it possible? how can it be done? thanks.

1- Most props are not solid objects, so cutting say a prop of a tree limb in half would make it look like an odd hollow tube... Not to mention, that inner faces won't render, so any inner faces pointing towards the camera would be invisible. To look right you would have to "cap" the cut geometry, something best done in a modeling program. Small objects like a chair leg or broken sword, you might be able to get away with a little post work touch up, but large props like a column or thick table top, you would really be best off capping and then re-texturing the part. On clothing it would be less noticeable, but then again it's more of a modeling issue... In earlier versions of DAZ Studio, I'd have said it's strictly something to do outside of DS in a modeling application, but I've see talk in certain threads that has led me to believe DS has some pretty advanced mesh editing features, but I haven't looked much into it beyond what I stumbled upon.
2- I'd make a transmap... I see people talking about issues with iRay and transparency maps, so I don't know if that would be a viable solution. I'd guess others will have better ideas.
EDITED TO ADD- sorry if the reply was initially worded oddly, I typed fast and my iPad changed half of it to gibberish.
1 - Backfaces render fine in DS in most cases.
2 - Transmaps work fine in Iray, if they look too transparent turn off limits on the cutout opacity and set it to about 1.25 or so.
Transmap would do the trick on clothing. Sometimes you just need to start breaking things apart in a modeller.
