how do you compensate your renders for darker vga monitors?
i go to bed at night thinking i've uploaded a nice render to my da gallery, but when i look at it from my dayjob vga monitor, render is so dark i wanna go all emo and weep.
i've tried saving png as interlace, non-interlace.
what do you do?

You should post your render so we can see, but it's a monitor calibration issue.
dayjob dont give admin rights to calibrate monitor >.< cant change screen timeout either.
if i crank light or gamma correct, lose color and nuance.
most arent using vga no more?
looks darker on my netbook, too. :/ but looks color rich on my hdmi monitor
Something to calibrate your monitor can help a lot!
I have a Spyder 4 Express and have been quite happy with it (the current version is the Spyder 5).
work computer? call your IT dept and tell them your monitor calibration is off and if you're a graphic artist you can't do your job properly.
Not using gamma correction is your first issue. GC is all about how the things looks on different platforms. Learn to use GC. Then make sure you apply a widely accepted color profile in post.
I speak from experience, I feel your pain. But you have to learn how to use gamma correction properly or you are always going to have an issue.
I tossed out monitor calibration as an issue because the 46" TV I use as a monitor won't keep the calibration I set for more than 2 hours. But using GC and making sure I do at least a little postwork, I no longer feel like there is a huge difference between what I see at home and elsewhere.
wont keep the calibration is not the nature of calbration. It sounds like the issue is the device and having done years in Graphic Art, Desktop Publishing and PrePress not having a properly calibrated monitor is like coming to work with no pants. Sure it's fun, but it's not advised.

Yes, its the device... I know its the device, but after getting used to having the 46" of screen real estate, I wasn't about to go back to the 21" I had previously.
That being said... without gamma correction, it doesn't matter how your monitor is calibrated.
I stick to a gamma output of 2.2. If you're colors are washed out, that means your lights are probably too bright. I would refer you to this thread: Gamma Correction Demystified

if you plan to use anything you make using that monitor on anything else it most certainly does, that being said the Gamma (or whitepoint) is a principal adjustment to the calibration process as a whole.

I only mentioned calibration in my experience because I can't calibrate my own. But what the OP is specifcally complaining about: their renders not looking the same from monitor to monitor, would only be helped by learning to use a linear process in their rendering. That's really my point; not suggesting that one should not properly calibrate.

In my experience I've had two identical monitors calibrated with the same settings and the settings I pull up instead of actually doing it step by step did not result in indetical calibration. They were also in the same room with the same lighting. So getting two monitors as close as possible is the goal, the reds may match on two and then the blues might be off enough to notice so no magic bullet I've found other than you need someone there to go through it. The other thing I've found is hot/cold colors for me are not the same hot/cold colors for someone else.
MistyMist, you should check to see if your HDMI monitor at home is set to a more intense setting. Try a movie setting possibly. I've seen a big difference going through presets on some so you may want to check and compare until you can do a real good calibration job.
