Poser vs DSON Core Installer
in The Commons
I can't find a straight answer anywhere. If a product states it has a "DSON core installer", but there are no poserCF files in the download. does that mean it CAN or CAN"T be used in poser?

No poserCF files means not for poser only DS !
Not entirely true, no Poser CF just means that the PA responsible for the product did not create them. If the product is for Genesis 1 or 2 it will probably work regardless of whether or not the Poser CF files are present. Note certain tech, like HD morphs will not transfer over to Poser, but there are only a few products that contain them.
What absent Poser CF files almost certainly mean is that the product has not been tested in Poser, and quite likely the PA that did them does not even own Poser. Despite this, it is still more likely than not that it would work in Poser. Natually there is a risk that it would not, but with DAZ's 30 day return policy you can always return a product that you can not get working.
BTW, there is a very handy script written by Dimension 3D that will load DSON content even where there are are no Poser CF files. The link for this script is here: http://d3d.sesseler.de/index.php?software=poserpython&product=dson_loader
Some items will not have PoserCFs as they lack user-facing files, things like morph sets for example may lack PoserCFs but will work in Poser.
Does Genesis 3 still not work in Poser?
Poser still doesn't support dual quaternion rigging, so no, it doesn't work.
I'm ignorant as to what "user-facing files" are - could someone please enlighten me? Tks!
Thanks for the good info. Coming from Poser, I assumed DSON meant it could be used with the DSON Poser Installer. Apparently DSON means more. For DAZ users, what is the significance of a product having a "DSON Core Installer"?
The ones you see in the library in Poser or in the content panes in Daz Studio, as opposed to the geometries, textures and - for Daz Studio - uv sets and morphs that work in the background.
DSON is the Daz Studio file format, so DSON Core means native Daz Studio files. The DSON Importer is a plug-in that allows Poser to import most features of a DSON file, given a companion file that shows in the library (or using a regular import dialogue via the Dimension3D script) - PoserCFs may also apply native Poser material settings.
The DSON core installer is the Daz Studio 4.5 and up content installer
