Windows 10 November update
Possibly off-topic here but I just read online about a November update for Widows 10, and apparently it's a 3 Gigabyte download. I thought I'd mention this to warn anyone who might find a sudden 3 Gigabytes of download to be a problem.
I'm currently close to my "acceptable use" download limit, and since you can't disable Windows 10 updates I'll be keeping my Windows 10 laptop switched off for now. The FAQ on the Microsoft website helfully suggests that if you are on a metered connection you should switch to an un-metered network for the download. Of course! I've got this connection with no limit handy, I just don't use it because I enjoy the limit
Luckily I don't use this computer for Daz Studio, it was an impulse buy that is looking more and more like a bad idea.

Go spend some time at your local McDonald's or Starbuck's...about 6 hrs or so. With the laptop...of course.
Starbuck's. They never seem to care how long you've been there or whether or not you've bought anything.
Yes, we've been discussing this here at another thread. There seems to be issues (what's new, right?) with this update. Some couldn't even get it to start downloading.
I myself had a few applications removed to an old folder and my Slimjet 64-bit browser had some files removed (a quick reinstall fixed that). I also had an issue with StartIsBack but today a new version was made available that fixed the isuues with this new build.
+1 on Starbucks. I average 3 hours per day there - and they have Google gigabit fiber, for truly fast downloads.
This insanely huge update did not install for me, until I hit Restart Now on the Updates page. Then it took a few minutes to start installing, who knows how long to install, and then flashed "we've done this" flyers before the computer would come up. But at least the thing installed, and I am less than thrilled with the chunk out of my data allowance. Why'd they want to completely re-do Win10, I wonder. They had to, for the update to be that big. I hope its worth it.
It wasn't worth it to me. I actually thought everything was fine. Today when I tuned on my desktop computer my Start menu was gone and no matter what I did I could not get it back. I did a fresh install of Windows 10 thinking this was at least going to keep my Firefox profiles, etc. But to my horrow everything is gone. DAZ Studio, Photoshop, DIM, all of my applications are gone. I will have to start all over. I will have to dig in to my previos backup to get my email profile back so I don't loose my emails.
This is so frustrating.
The only applications I have installed so far are Firefox and Cyberfox.
Wow, I am sorry about all your programs. That's a terrible thing to happen. So far everything seems to be working on this machine, thankfully. As I said though, I hope MSoft does not do this again. Issue a honkin' big upgrade like this. They must've completely re-done Win10. Ah, well, it's done, no need to fuss, and at least I am up and running. So sorry for your trouble.
Even though I will have to reinstall everything, I did find the old profiles in the Windows.old folder. I just copied over the Cyberfox profile and it seems to be working, all the plugins are doing their thing with no issues. I guess I can get my other profiles back this way. The problem is the time it will take me to reinstall all those applications, and when that is done, hope that my Start menu doesn't disappear on me again.
Looking at what this version does is it is nice to be able to fresh install Win 10 with your Win 7 / Win 8 / Win 8.1 product keys and they have also expanded support for Cortana to Australia, Canada, Japan and India.. As well as it is supposed to boot 30% faster over Win 7 or so they say..

Holding on to Win 7 for now... :)
Me to. I have no interest in Win 10
Yup. I'll upgrade a few weeks before the deadline.
Which deadline do you mean? The one when Windows 10 is no longer free, or when they drop support for Windows 7?
There have been rumours that it may be free for about a year but I hope they will keep supporting Windows 7 for much longer than that.
My new laptop is Windows 10 but I have no plans to migrate my Desktop from 7 to 10. In fact I'm still using XP Mode on the desptop to run my database of Poser/Studio content which is in an old version of Microsoft Works. I really must get around to replacing that with a newer database engine sometime.
Yeah, save yourself the grief, until you are forced to. At any minute now I am expecting my Start menu to disappear on me again. I have been reading a lot about this issue and it seems that the causes of this problem are many and the solutions very few (if they work at all). None of the solutions worked for me.
I should have stayed with Windows 7. I am now extremely regretting the move.
So far I have been able to reinstall DAZ Studio 3 Adv, DAZ Studio 4.8, DAZ Installation Manager, and Carrara 3D 8.5 Pro. And all my Internet browsers, and a few generic applications with all their settings and data intact. So far, so good. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I still have a lot of stuff to install.
The Windows 10 Start menu disappearing act is as old as the Windows 10 Technical Preview! And Microsoft still doesn't seem to have a solution to the problem. Unreal.

Before this last monster update, I would've recommended Win10 very highly, but now I don't think I would. I am finding little bugs after that last update, nothing major, but little irritating bugs. File Explorer won't open zips anymore, for instance, and won't show as a default app for zips. Plus Win10 is becoming a pure download data hog. And the screen settings aren't right now for certain sites.
Think very, very carefully before you sign on for Win10. It has stymied me totally, until I get these kinks ironed out.
So far I'm satisfied with W10.
At first I didnt want it, but my son updated in july (cuz all his friends did, heh) and I kinda liked the startmenu. Still, I held back for a few months because everything worked fine in W7so why ruin it? But I finally bit the bullet and installed 10 on top of 7. It was horrible! I had so many bugs that I had to make a clean install and since then I have no problems. OFC I tweaked a few things in the registry etc, like MS sharing my bandwidth with who knows how many millions while updating and shut down Cortana and UAC and so on. But now I'm happy with it. DS works fine, actually better than with W7, Iray is faster too. I love the live tiles! I made Daz, renderosity, paypal etc a live tile and stuck it to the startmenu so I dont even have to open my browser to get on their site. I just click on the tile and I'm in. And to me its faster than W7 was.
I recommend to all who wants to upgrade to make a clean install and enable GodMode to have full controll over your OS.
Same thing happened with me. I fought with it for a couple weeks trying to decide if I should keep it, return to 7 or what. Eventually I did a fresh install of 10 and I'm not missing 7 as much as I thought I would be (although I still am missing it)
Could you please be more specific about what you mean by "GodMode"? Is that an actual choice label during installation? Or are you saying to run in standard Windows7 Administrator mode or some other mode I'm not aware of?
And when you say you did a fresh or clean install, are you implying to wipe the disk, reformat, install from scratch and reload gobs of 3rd party softwares? A party pooper for me!
I can do it, but am loathe to.
Just downloading the latest update wow it seems to be huge will take some time to get this. Wonder what they are doing?

Just create a folder named: God Mode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
Click on the folder and you will get a new window open, like a control panel, with a lot of stuff you can use to configure your OS and applications.
You could even just name it: {ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
That's the value that counts.

If you opt to keep data files and profiles, Windows 10 will still remove some and store the others in windows.old. Other applications store their profiles and data files in the main folder (C: for most); in folder called: ProgramData. Some will remain, but I suspect it will be the ones Windows 10 knows about. Many applications will be gone because Windows 10, according to some, will assume they are pirated. This is the cry that has been heard all over the Internet. This is one of the reasons Windows 10 is getting the reputation it has.
So get ready to hunt down your data and profiles and re-install all your applications if you opt for this solution.
I hope that what you guys state is true and that I will not suffer the disappearing Start menu with this fresh installation I was forced to do.
nDelphi explained GodMode.
Yup I wiped the disk and installed everything again. Took me a day but I dont regret it cuz everything runs smoothly now.
Its true. Why would I lie? :) But every PC is different so anything can happen.
If you have cap, you can consider changing settings to say you have a useage cap; only way of home version to stop auto updates; windows 8 rocks /nod
I absolutely liked Win10 until this last gargantuan update -- no sense in a 3 gig update! -- then finding all the aggravating little things it did, like resetting file associations. I liked opening zips w/File Explorer and liked MS Edge, too, but now the settings are all messed up. And I can't get 'em back.
I wish now I'd stayed w/previous windows.
Would you clarify that? How can MS share someone's bandwidth? I am not challenging you, I am concerned. My data download allowance goes down too fast these days, and I'm wondering why.
What Win 10 does with updates is, potentially, use your computer as a 'server' for pushing the updates out, much like a torrent: you become both leech and seeder.
I allow updates and so far it never resetted anything for me.
You can disable the shared bandwidth thing
http://thenextweb.com/microsoft/2015/07/30/windows-10-steals-your-bandwidth-to-send-other-people-updates/
I understand that if you have a update downloaded that it will then use you as a distribution node to assist updating other computers downloading the update by getting part from you. Just like the old filesharing apps use to do, only now it is microsoft doing it and using your bandwidth to assist them with out your permission.
