And we appreciate you very much!
The Old World Knight includes 3DL textures as well as Iray even though the promos are all Iray and it doesn't mention 3DL on the product page.
Seems a bit strange to me. Even if the vendor didn't want to make a 3DL promo, just mentioning in the notes that it includes 3DL textures wouldn't take much effort and might get a few more sales.
For all you crayon lovers in the thread:
http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/65785/ot-coloring-books-for-adults
I've seen this, but it's probably very confusing for newcomers, who won't know about that rule.
It would be nice if DAZ would create an icon similar to their "Rendered in IRay" label, but for 3Delight. Vendors could use this on 3Delight promos going foward, and it would cut down on a lot of confusion.
Also agreed with the poster who suggested putting tags on products for IRay and/or 3Delight support so they could be searched for specifically.
What's the procedure for bringing suggestions to DAZ? Is it opening a support ticket or is there a better way?
A support ticket is the best way.
A graphics card that's on its last legs can die from the stress.
You don't have to use Iray with GPU which is where some computers have trouble; you can use CPU. However, no one is forced to use Iray. I agree that any product, post-Iray, should clearly state if they have 3DL, Iray or both. Pre-Iray is only going to have 3DL (for DS).
Thank you. :-) So using CPU rendering ought to be relatively safe then.
Thank goodness for the Uber Base. :-)
I'm not sure I understand the issue, items with iray shaders render fine in 3delight when I do it.
I was very worried that I had trashed mine when I tried Iray in GPU mode. I have an iMac with a 2GB NVidia GTX 680MX so too little VRAM to be a seious option. Nevertheless, I tried it and immediately got blocky pixels all over my display. I'm not talking about the render - I'm talking about the screen in any other application or just desktop with DAZ Studio minimized or closed. As it happens, a reboot clears it but I haven't risked it often - I try again each time there is a system software update. I've seen similar reports on the Apple forum but not with DAZ Studio/Iray or my GPU (most Macs have AMD cards). The problem will only appear when I try Iray and it is guaranteed to happen if I do run Iray. This is what it looks like:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/26911373#26911373
So I went back to 3Delight and, recently, Luxrender with the acceleration option.
Interesting .. because I've never seen that mentioned before. So how were non-Iray users to know. I don't use 4.8 because when I initially downloaded it, it screwed up my system, so I deleted it and went back to 4.7. So as far as I knew, anything with only Iray materials wouldn't work for me.
Anyone else surprised to hear Iray products render fine in 3Delight?
Yes. :-) I tried to make PBR maps work in earlier versions of DS and Poser, and was not successful at all, especially with a metalness (diffuse/normal/metal/roughness maps) setup.
That's why I danced a jig on the roof when I found that IRay would work for me.
Very entertaining for the neighbors.
I think it depends on what the product is whether it renders decently in 3delight. I have noticed textures look okay on some items, poorly on others. I won't buy iray only textures hoping it will look ok in 3delight.
Sady, even stuff that says it does both, sometimes textures still look optimized for iray. 3delight textures used to look better, before the iray implementation, especailly on the main characters. Now more attention and focus is on IRay, the 3delight textures seem to have taken a slide. I can't wait for a conversion process which will allow me to use gen 5 and 6 content on gen 7, these textures predate iray, and look better to me often in 3delight than the new gen 7 ones do.
is it the textures themselves or the settings that's different?
Not sure, really. Seems like textures look good in gen 5 and 6 characters out of the box in 3delight. The textures for gen 7 are harder to light for me and look off. I don't enjoy messing with skin textures that much. I'm more interested in the figure shapes. So if I have to bend over backwards to get something to look nice, I'm more likely just to use something else.
I can see why people like Iray. A comparison render of Arabella 7 in just the basic lights for Iray, make her skin and texture pop. The same thing can not be said about rendering in 3dleight. It is far easier to get stunning immeadiate results using Iray with the new textures.
Ah, ok. I haven't bought any of the 7 series or characters.
I'm a fiddler by nature, so I usually go in and tweak things to get a look I want.
I know in my case I use the same material setup for 3dl that I always used (just tweaked for the new textures)....and while they are as good as they used to be, it is just when you compare them to what can be done in Iray, they look like they fall short.
Rawn
I can see that, for sure. Even when I look at my own work of the past decade+, I see what I thought looked good in 2006 and think 'yeesh'.
You have to be using a version of DS that supports Iray, otherwise the program does not know what to do with the Uber Iray shader and it renders solid white. Other than that though, 3Delight does a passable to really good job of converting the Iray shader.
That's more helpful info.
So Iray works fine, sometimes, with 3Delight IF Daz 4.8+ is being used, not Daz 4.7. So in other words, I still need to be sure the item I'm looking to buy isn't Iray only.
If you need another lovely lady, Gypsyangel's Destiny for Olympia 6 was released today, http://www.daz3d.com/destiny-for-olympia-6 and as far as I can tell, it does not include Iray presets. I found the commercial thread and there is no mention of Iray there, either. (http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/56181/destiny-for-g2-olympia-coming-soon-commercial/p1)
I'm sorely tempted, though I actually use Iray more often than not...
I don't suppose anyone knows if the new Collective3d Movie Sets Haunted House product caters to one engine or the other or both, do they? I'm not seeing anything specific in the description, though I think maybe, by the look of the renders, that it's at least Iray.
Best thing would be to ask the PA in question, in his Commercial thread HERE
It didn't link, but I'll look for it. Thanks :D
I only mentioned it here because the lack of info is a perfect example of why I started this thread to begin with.
When I got the Forgotten Chapel or Forsaken Chapel -- anyway, little wooden chapel -- I forgot to check for IRay materials. I saw "duf" and assumed...dangerous word, assume. :-)
Anyway, after it was installed, I didn't see an IRay option but loaded 'er up intending to use the Uber Shader. I didn't need to, the chapel went dark anyway, when I disabled the headlamp on the camera. If something goes dark in Texture Shaded view, I figure it's IRay ready. So don't know what happened, unless IRay converted it automatically. :-)
But now I double check for IRay mats, and usually pass if there aren't any listed, unless it's an irresistible deal.
No, it only means there aren't any standard lights in the scene. When everything goes dark like that, use <ctrl>-L to toggle the preview light — it's needed if you have only Iray mesh or environment lights in the scene, since they don't show up in the Viewport before rendering.
There are a number of ways that rendering can do damage to a machine. Basically, electronics generate heat and heat can damage electronics. Some heat over a long time will wear on the electronics, a lot of heat can fry said electronics. Note, I'm specifically using the general term 'electronics' rather then gpu, cpu, etc.. because 'any' electronics can be damaged from too much heat. With that in mind, there are a lot of variables such as age of the electronics in question, the way the system was built (how much airflow, etc...,) how close to the edge various components are allowed to run as set by the manufacturer, a 3d party incorporating a component in a build or the end user, etc...
What does this all boil down to? A few things:
1. There are no easy answers, but if the system is a quality system from a reliable source and no mods have been done to cause the components to run faster then factory spec then one 'should' be safe until the components get old. Note, desktop units are much safer then notebooks because of airflow differences in each.
2. Most damage comes from running the component(s) at full throttle over an extended period of time.
3. Airflow is your friend, this means not using a notebook on a bed with a nice soft comforter blocking the vent holes, cleaning the vents of said notebook on a regular basis, cleaning the inside and all vents of a desktop machine (dust is an insulator) etc...
There are a lot of other things that go into this but for most people, if not familiar with system building, if worried about possibility of damage to a machine, find a repair shop that you trust with a service technician that works on gaming rigs and explain what you are doing and ask for input.
Thanks. :-) I do use Cntrl L to Preview then turn it off to render. But even with Cntrl L off, some textures will still show up for me in the Texture Shaded preview window (I'm thinking of faces of G2s w/no IRay shader particularly) -- after I've turned off the camera headlamp. So I figured if it shone, it needed to be converted. If it didn't, It was ok.
I appreciate the correction.
Thank you very much, also :-) The computer I have was actually designed as a mid-range gaming computer, when I got it. I don't play games, but I looked at the specs and liked them, so figured it'd be good for graphics, also. But it's a couple of years old, so of course it's not comparing to gaming rigs now -- plus it isn't custom built, just one off the shelf with RAM that I added. (I can pop in RAM sticks, but that's about all.) I do have plenty of ventilation, and try not to kill it with multi-tasking while rendering with IRay. I try to keep the Performance on Energy Save, but do flip over to High for DS and IRay. Maybe I should re-think that last. :-)
Thank you again, I appreciate the info.
