Yeah- Fog Tool Deluxe, I have that one!

WillowRaven- I couldn't tell, good job. Your renders must go really quick.

What I would do is since he suggesting three renders:

    1. Iray no fog
    2. Iray with fog (the smooth thick soupy kind)
    3. 3DL with fog (all items black and all the fog variety you wish)

Composite these three. I would use layer mode "screen" or "overlay" in photoshop for the 3DL fog render  on top and erase the parts not needed or— those layer modes in photoshop make dark areas fade away so what you are left with is only the fog. Any brighter or darker areas of the 3DL fog could be lit to mimic the Iray meshlights or adjust those ares in post to be lighter/darker. I dont think it would be too tricky as the fog doesn't have enough detail to show a big difference in lighting but that would depend on your scene.

    How does this sound?

I tend to get testy if renders go over an hour, lol. My preferred environments and lights are the Easy Environment by FlipMode. I've also used the swamp product by Andrey Pestryakov, again with EE lights.

I also learned if I do spot renders, saved as pngs, it goes much faster than if I rendered the full 5000-pixel wide scene at once. I can then piece them back together in photoshop. I use the thirds guide as a way of making sure I don't skip any areas.

Just thought I'd pop in and post one of my latest experiments with Above the Fog.  I created a couple of new maps to try out.  I have two geometry shells stacked on top of each other with my map in the Opacity Cutout slot.  Rendered in Iray.

Still playing around with it.  I've gotten some really interesting effects that are in no way foglike that I'll be rendering out in the near future.  I just have to find the right shader or texture to go with those unusual results.

Isn't it, though?  I was kind of surprised at this myself.  The image I used for the Cutout Opacity isn't like any of the things I tried before that I sent you.  It was one of those fluke things when you see something and you say, "Oh, what the heck, I'll try it just to see what it looks like" type of things.  I'm still experimenting, but I have some interesting images that I'm working on that are definitely not fog type renders using Above the Fog.

Just picked this up today.  After work today I have the next several days off and am hoping to experiment a bit with this.  Been on my wishlist for quite some time lol

Those days off are so precious! So glad my work will be a part of that free time. Let me know if you have any questions.

Your first image (of three) didn't show but I think we can move ahead. can you add a skydome/sphere, or ground plane and try another render? the fog needs a background.

Sounds like a good clue. I haven't been using one. I'll have to work with that over the weekend, fingers crossed, and repost either way.

Well, the skydome makes the prop more obviously there. With default settings, still nowhere near the promos, where the prop looks much more luminous; glowing.

Also, for the wierdness of it, I've attached one of my first Strato renders.
