Dark Corrosion Shaders Not Applying

I just picked up the Dark Corrosion Shaders (which look totally awesome) but I can't seem to get them to apply.  When I click on the base shader it actually takes off all of the textures on the piece I am trying to apply it to and turns it white.  If I try and add a color it doesn't do anything.  Have tried it in both Iray and 3delight, made sure my prop was selected in the scenes tab and in the surfaces tab.  I can add other shaders and they work but I can't for the life of me get these to work.  But i'm new so it could very easily be user error.

Don't know if it the case here,  but did you try to do a quick render.  Sometimes complex "ShaderMixer" shader look grey in color on the preview screen,  the actual results are not seen until you render them.

I did try to render them in Iray and they were still grey.  Let me go try it in 3delight.

I can confirm. 3Delight works fine, but Iray is just pure white.

That did the trick in 3delight thank you!   I will let the full render go through in Iray as well to see if it works.  Honestly, I do mostly 3delight and haven't really tried to tackle Iray yet so I am most happy even if they are not made for Iray.  Honestly, I hope you guys all know how much you are appreciated for answering all the questions I ask.

Yes, I just did a quick test in Iray and they are pure white.  3delight renders just fine

Those would be older,  from the pre-Iray days.   most likely  3Delight only.

I checked the product page and it doesn't say anything about Iray so I am just going to assume its intended for 3delight.  Which is fine for me as that is what I am most comfortable with and had planned on using anyway.  And i was right they are super cool looking lol!

In other words, are these useless for Iray renders? Or is there a way to make them work in Iray too?

  • They make extensive use of the Shader Mixer pattern bricks, so they would be at least tricky to convert to Iray.

Mec4d's PBS shaders (http://www.daz3d.com/mec4d-pbs-shaders-vol-1-for-iray will do corrosion and other awesome effects for you. A product not to be missed.

Thanks for pointing that out. It's a bit different in price than the $.79 for the Dark Corrosion shaders though, but I've added it to my wishlist.

On my wishlist although I haven't really ventured very deep into the iray waters just yet.

3DL shaders in Iray can be a real pain. I finally narrowed down a recent set of crashes to a material I had had to copy a shader to (because for some reason the material wouldn't allow me to change the shader directly, I had to use mixer)

Ya so far I have stuck mostly to 3DL as the amount of stuff to learn for Iray is a bit mind boggling for a beginner.  And I don't always have hours to figure out something on Iray when for my purposes the 3DL works just fine for now.  But I am reading all I can on Iray for the time when I am willing to dip my toes further in the water there lol.

If/when you hit Iray, just reserve judgement for at least 2 weeks. ;) You'll spend at least 2 weeks going 'wtf is this nonsense?? ARGH! THIS IS HORRIBLE!'

And then you'll start to make sense of it and have fun (probably).

lol Well the good news is a.  I really really like to learn new things.  And b.  I am stubborn as he** and have no problem torturing myself to learn new things lol.

I am dreading as much about Iray as I can. Not ready to actually use it just yet but I am reading all of the threads and looking at the settings etc. so that when i am ready to give it a try, I will at least understand a bit of this does that and if I change this it will do this kind of thing.  And familiarizing myself with the terms which honestly, the first time I looked at it you are right I went "WTF" rather loudly lol.  Its slowly starting to make some kind of sense so I won't be completely lost when its time to give it a go.  I still have so much to learn with just the basics of setting up scenes, DOF, etc.  Occupying myself with the newbie competitions and reading the wealth of info in those threads too.
