I have Adam Thwaites Troll for V3 and it comes with a hair, but when I click to add it, nothing happens. I am aware it's for an older model and problem, but that never stopped them from working before. Currently using Daz 4.8
I was thinking maybe I could import it or add it some other way, then resave it. There is no obj file, just the hr2 one.

HR2 is pretty much the same as a PP2, so it should load, only thing that I can think of that might stop it is if it's a dynamic hair as DS can't use them.
Poser .hr2 files are props, the only differences are the extension on the file name and which Library folder it's stored in. It's an artificial difference introduced in very early versions of Poser, that just never went away. You should be able to load it into the scene on its own, then either save as a Scene Subset, or do it properly as a native D|S-format Prop Asset.
If there isn't a separate .obj file, then the object mesh data is probably embedded in the .hr2 file. It shouldn't be, but old content items were frequently set up in very odd ways by modern standards, and it should work anyway.
As for Poser dynamic hair, I don't think I've ever seen one as an .hr2 file, they've all been actual props, in the Prop Library folder.
If you mean Adam's free troll for V3 then yes the HR2 is Poser dynamic hair (just checked it), there is no mesh for DS to load as these just have vertex data in them so Poser can "grow" it.
