Suggestion: make a "See what other users made with this product" button

I'm sorry if this is supposed to go in a differen forum, but I thought it doesn't classify as "Product suggestion".

When I browsed today through some products ( I think it was the Devil's Toybox: http://www.daz3d.com/the-devils-toybox), I realized that sometimes one just wants to see more than showed on the promo page. Especially when it's an old product and things has been upgraded since (think old renders before Iray or even UberEnvironment). I bet that there are many renders of this item, that has been around there for some time, stacked in the DAZ Galleries. Probably even with the proper tag in the "Used content" part.

So,  wouldn't it be convinient to have, on every content page, a button saying "See what other users made with this product" (Or "see how other users used this product in their render", anyway the idea is clear). If you click it will filter a page for you from the galleries with renders using this product. I bet there is a way to create this page using some tag-system.

I think it would be helpfull for both old and new products. Old ones because stuff gets updated and you want to see if other users at least could crank it up with new shaders or something to look nice in Iray or other engine. New ones to show the very first renders of the product before buying it on a sale. Basically this is what is usually happening in the forums after new release: everyone is posting pictures. But not everyone is visiting forums, so having such a button would be nice in my opinion.

I know that people can off course also mess up and make an not so appealing render. But on the other hand, you know you're browsing user's galleries. Not proffesional promo's right?

What do you guys think?

That is a great idea. I have been thinking this for a long time. In fact, not seeing what others have done has probably stopped me from buying some items. The vendor images are just not enough sometimes.

Sounds like a good idea to me, I have seen a number of products with promos that do not do it justice because they are so old even the shadows look rubbish. It leaves one wondering what it would look like with a modern renderer. Whilst it is technically do able, since in the DAZ galleries users have flagged what products have been used, once problem would be that the product may not be the primary focus of the user render. It might have also been kit bashed, for example the artist used the model, but changed the textures.

I know, but I think it's still better than nothing. And if you're confused about whether it's been "kit bashed" I think you could always ask in the comment section of the picture. Also I think even if the item is not a center of attention, it still might generate some idea's about a possible scene. And that might be the needed drop to let you buy it, right?

And yes, some products won't have any renders uploaded on the DAZ page and the search might return empty, but for a lot of products you will get lots of renders to look at.

That's true.  Sometimes I use bits and pieces of lots of different products in my renders, but I still reference them in my list of products on the side.  If someone has a specific question in the comments, though, I'm not likely to see it right away since there are no notifications that I'm aware of for gallery comments.  It might help if the messaging system at least extended to the gallery so that one could click on the name and get the ability to send a message in the same way as the forums.

While a good suggestion, I would hazard the guess that only about 10% - 20% of the artists in the gallery are posting the product breakdown. A definite requirement to make your button functional.

Daveleitz, the artist will get a notification of each comment (even their own). However, there is virtually no interconnect between the forum and gallery. You cannot, for example, click on the artist's name and access their profile to PM (this has been commented on a few times in the forums).

The downside from the vendors point is the button could take to an image that is absolutely horrible which could hurt sales.

Great idea, and it's totally doable - Renderosity does exactly this (product pages have a Gallery link showing renders using that product).

I'd love this. So many promo images aren't really representative of the versatility that can be achieved with the product, because they are constrained somewhat in what they can portray and show. Would love to see a 'look what can be made' with this prodcut option.

Make it so that higher rated images are shown first.

    That!

And also, I think that everyone who will click the button realizes that some people can make a bad render. So, suppose you click and see a horrid render. But you just have seen the promo renders, which are great. Won't you automatically think that the guy who did the bad render just doesn't have the skill yet? Or would you go all paranoia, because the vendor is definitely hiding how bad the actual product is? I think the first one is more likely to occur.

It is more likely to occur, but the type that would react with the second are far more likely to run off to the forums screaming about "vendor trash."

Yes, I completely intended the MMORPG-based equivocation there.

Add a "use at your own risk, vendor takes no responsability" under the button? wink
