I just caught the new banner item on the front page for the Editor's Choice Top Art Submissions for September 2015, and wow every one of those submissions look amazing :D Congrats to everyone who made it on the video :)
So I presume that this is going to be a regular thing that DAZ will do from now on?

There are a number of nice realistic images here. I would've liked to see a broarder range of images, covering different styles. I don't have a particular interest in photo-realism, and the close-ups of faces, aren't to my particular taste, although well-done.
I prefer more action, and more things happening in the images, and the use of props, and other fine details. I also like less focus on realism.
So for me, the video seems somewhat bland. I'm sure the images are popular, which why they are picked.
There were some really great images, but seemed more likely they were chosen becuase they demonstate the awesomeness of IRAY. None of them looked like 3delight, although I suppose the couple of the stylised ones could have been.
Really nice to see a Bryce image amongst the choices.
Agreed. I've never really gotten on the IRAY bandwagon. Although I know this is a popular renderer.
It does seem to favour Iray, but I think that's because a lot of people are using it right now. Some of the ones that look Iray could also be Octane or Lux, or even 3Delight or just about any engine really (hyper real geeks). I did see quite a few that looked like biased renders. Would have liked the video to dwell a little longer on each image. The vid is so short, sort of like being zip-lined through the CG section of a huge gallery.
I think the obsession with photorealism will taper off over time. I think it's about artists striving to conquer the CG edge, and as more and more of them do they'll start wondering, "what next?" I do think that PBR engines are here to stay and will make up the majority of usage though.
I disagree.
Since joining the 3D art community in 2006, I've read countless discussions about how to use 3Delight and Firefly to create physically accurate materials and lighting effects to produce realistic looking renders. It's why products like the Uber Shader Pack and Uber Lighting Bundle were created. Poser 8 introduced IDL for the same reason. Many artists want realism, and neither engine is even capable of some effects.
Reality introduced a simple alternative to 3Delight by serving as a bridge to Luxrender, but it's external UI is still a barrier for many artists.
Now, we have a built-in option with Iray, using DS's native UI. As a result, anyone with an interest in realism and is familiar with DS has access to an unbiased render engine, and content that comes with Iray-optimized shaders.
The obsession with photorealism isnt't going to taper off, it's going to get stronger, and Iray renders are going to become more prevalent.
@ Nyghtfall - Yes, I could be wrong, but I think in terms of creativity a lot of people will grow tired of realism. Yes, a lot of people were getting gorgeously real results with the biased engines, but a lot of people spent more time trying to get there than actually being there, so I'm still betting on a shift towards more diverse stylistic choices (as more artists conquer photoreal). Sure, producing an image that is mistaken for a photo is the height of technical achievement, but there is a lot more to art than that. I don't expect Iray or any of the common PBR renders are going anywhere, but I think these engines open up as many new possibilities for different styles as they do for photorealism.
