Continuing with Imari, the G9F figure about whom I've posted previously, this scene takes on a more sinister tone. Imari is a lost soul, condemed to Purgatory for sins in her previous life. In that limbo world she's plagued by nightmares -- this one of a demonic ragdoll, recurring on several occasions.

Scarcely have any time to put down any notes, except to say I took inspiration from BPRD for the color palette.

In Purgatory there is a daily struggle to hold on to past lives. Without their memories souls in the afterlife lose themselves, eventually fading into oblivion. Imari, gentle as she is, has a peculiar gift: to peer into people's hearts and remind them of themselves -- of their hopes, of their travails, of who they were.
To what end? So that they may decide to embark, however haltingly, on the winding path towards redemption.

On those momentous occasions when Heaven had serious business with Purgatory, it handed the task over to a divine intermediary. The more portentious the mission the higher the rank of the agent dispatched. Though a multitude of angels and seraphs were on Heaven's roster, for delicate matters concerning affairs of the heart -- and in Purgatory, the most nuanced ones always involved the human heart -- Heaven deputized its newly admitted souls.
Few in the afterlife had a better handle on human nature than did a former cop ...

A different take on the same scene. This time she voices the quiet part out loud. At least to herself, she does.

I put some effort into the Genesis 9 Toon figure, dialed backed a bit on the morphs to make it more relatable -- or so I think, in so far as the base toon appears too stylized for my taste! I really like the simplified brows and eyelashes. On a technical note, these objects takes up less memory than the photoreal ones. As a consequence, the scene renders faster in Eeeve. My choice of hair follows the same line of thinking. Using NPR shaders, the silhouette matters more than detail or texture. In this regard, the Genesis 3 hair come out ahead IMHO,
Most of the line art and the monochrome shading came out straight from Blender; I had to add a few here and there with CSP. The hatching and the background lend a manga-esque look to the scene.
Cheers!

Inez, Heaven's Delegate, and Imari swap news about the comings and goings in Purgatory. They also compare notes on the importance of self-awareness and free will in shaping a soul's ultimate destiny, posthumously.
Update: Reworked the scene lighting and the shaders to lower the contrast. Together with cleaner line art, having light and shadow cluster towards the median range prdouced a pleasant cel-shaded tone.

Another G9 character I've been working on. Andriv is derived from the Genesis 9 anime base. I've attached an earlier concept art using a G8M figure.
I like this newer rendition here as the seasoned police detective looks sharp, fit for duty, and less frumpy. Lt. Andriv is Sgt. Inez's boss. The whole-replacement cyber arm is an old wound from the war he fought in. After his honorable discharge, Andriv joined the civilian police force.
In case it's not obvious, I've rendered this scene following manga aesthetics. I'm getting the hang of sculpting clothes, adjusing shading and adding line art all to approximate creases and folds. Yes, I try, however the outcome falls short.
I've also attached a screenshot of the scene in Blender.
Cheers!

Same scene but with the camera up closer and different background beyond the windows. Pretty sure I broke the perspective lines.
At first I had his shirt mesh covering all of the cyberarm up until the wrist. It looked better, more tactical, when exposed -- all the tension sinews and the mechanical joints, minus the skin job sheathing. For a cop it sent the signal that Andriv was all no-nonsense business and little else. Tough, though, imagining how he got dressed in the morning until I reasoned that his shirt could be secured via velcro encircling the chest and the back.

This is Sgt. Inez indulging in a dreamy flight of fantasy. Initially the scene was to be set in the mountains, but after framing it with clouds and alpine grass I decided to leave out the terrain. Negative space -- it's an invitation to the viewer to fill in the gaps with their own imagination.
It's a challengr juggling the overall tone of the scene. Maybe if I had the patience to apply hatching by hand there would be a more hand-illustrated aspect to this. But I'm happy mexing 2D with 3D and relying on stipples for toning. The part of the process I enjoyed was using the sculpting tools in Blender to shape the folds and drapery of her clothes, all of which added to the cel shaded look.
Cheers!
