I have thought my computer was downloading over night with Dim but found out it restarted on me which meant little was downloaded.

I just bought a new computer a couple months ago and managed to get windows 7 on it.  this was right before 10 was offered to replace 8 which everyone hated.  I refuse to do updates as well and would have probably switched to a MAC by now but I don't the MAC will run all of my games. I have a huge library of rpg games that I won't give up lol. Being forced to update would cause me serious stress issues.  I HATE being told I have to do something for something that I bought and paid for.

It shouldn't get to that point. It would be a pain for me to constantly do that on my desktop. I used to be able to right click on the network icon on the task bar and disable the network. I could re-enable it just as easy. *After Windows 7 it is not that easy. I have to navigate thru several windows. I have to take the time and try and find a tool that might make that easy again.

    * Correction.

By since windows7 do you mean after 7 or including it? I still have windows7 (will probably update at some point but since I want to take that time to wipe my computer I'm putting it off since that will take effort) and I have the network icon on the taskbar.

Speaking of annoying things our computers do, my laptop has taken to randomly turning the wireless off. Why laptop.

Windows has for quite a while had built into it a point where wireless internet would get disconnected if the system got too out of date (especially with security updates.) It was a common service call to come, hook up a system to a wired network and update it so the system would go back online wirelessly. It is very possible that Microsoft could extend this in the future, perhaps even restricting a system at some point from any internet other then to access Microsoft servers to do an update. I'm not saying this will happen, but based on Microsoft's past it's a possibility.

Linux would be a nice option for people who would like more control over their environment if it was possible and easier to keep core components such as graphics drivers on par with Windows. For basic web surfing, email, etc... this isn't an issue, but for content creation (or gaming, vr, etc...) this becomes an issue unfortunately. And, Linux still requires a not insignificant investment in time (learning curve) to build and maintain a system.

So, no easy answers for anyone who isn't comfortable with the current direction of technology.

I would be on xubuntu 100% if all my damn software ran on it. I am thinking of trying again, with a virtualbox windows running lol. It's really a shame more software does not support it, ever single program I ever tried that had windows and linux versions, ran more stable on xubuntu. I stuck with win7 because I have it tuned the best I can, turn everything unnecessary off etc. Windows 8 pissed me off when I tried it for a while. I hate all that fancy pretty BS, I want all my CPU and RAM for my programs, not for aero and crap like that. Xubuntu is the lightest version of linux I tried that I can actually work without googling all day, I am certainly not the type of person that ikes to memorize all kinds of typed commands.

I'm still on Win 7 since I cancelled my 'reservation' for Win10 before they released it. There's an icon on my taskbar but other than that MS hasn't bothered me.

I used to get updates middle of the month, then last month they sent them on the 7th. I went to shut off the machine because t-storms were coming and did it so fast I noticed the icon simultaneously with clicking 'shut down'. EIGHTEEN updates came in.

I just noticed it's the 9th and there they are again.

I can't disconnect from cable because that would shut down i'net for our Kindles too. Between the two of us we have four and three of them are in constant use.

Off to install updates--want to get it over with....

If Daz worked in Linux, I'd be gone. Well IRAY too.

I hate the Windows 8 updates... 97 updates... What the hell needs 97 updates? My wife's laptop twice decided to update the moment it was in the process of shutting down, which led to corrupt updates which eventually led to having to reinstall the OS. My father in law's brand new Dell has some sort of update related problem where it keeps freezing more or less halfway through the update which leads to the computer running slow as molasses and frequently freezing for a minute or two.  Windows 10 can suck it as far as I'm concerned, as all I hear is they have made it harder to refuse updates... One more level of removing the user's control over something they own, but are basically only borrowing at the seller's discretion.

If you have a mac and you want to game seriously consider using some Windows emulation (Wine in OS X, Win 8/10 in bootcmap, or all other versions of Windows with Parallels or VMWare) Mac has really, really stepped down it's graphics prowess in the past few years in favor of pretty machines for people who use the App Store and shop on Etsy. I've deployed 100's of macs in the past decade, I don't know what Tim Cook is thinking but I want to slap him down a flight of stairs and say "good game"

  • I *just* upgraded to windows 7 from XP a couple months ago when i built my "new" computer and I still despise win7 as much as I did when win7 was shiny and new. Installed all the necessary updates then tracked down the GWX updates because I dont want win10 and dont want to be reminded. This has the side effect of being unable to customize windows features and see what updates I have installed. I feel as if I only have partial control over my system with win7.

#1 reason I turn off any kind of automatic update is to avoid an "update oops".

Anyway, I've been gone awhile... What the heck happened to the forums?...

Staying with 7 for the next several years.

Well, you've got about two years anyways.  I think that's when they said all support for windows 7 and 8 is getting pulled - including security updates.

Windows 7 SP1 has extended support until 2020 and Windows 8.1 until 2023. Basically that means security updates, access to paid support and online product info. So you can still use them for quite a few years, unless MS change their policy (they did a couple of times with XP).

  • Ok so I have changed my update settings to let me chose whether to download and install updates. My next question is what are good recources for finding out what these updates are and also, how to go about uninstalling updates.

I really hate reading about things like this first thing in the morning.

Windows forcing my computer to goose-step on a regular basis is one reason why I wish more of the things I do on my home PC were linux-viable. I would just move to linux and have done with it. Sadly for most games and many other applications this is not really an option.

Be careful it you choose to get updates through Windows Update in Win 8. I saw there was a security update under important updates and checked it to get it - then I looked under "optional updates" and there was Windows 10 - checked (all the other optional updates were unchecked). If I hadn't seen it it would have started upgrading my system without my knowledge. Must be a new strategy as it didn't do that last time I updated...

Thanks for that warning.  THat is really sneaky.   I have uninstalled KB3035583 Twice already and just found it on my system again today.

The only thing keeping me away from win 10 is the horrifically bland and anti-customizable GUI in both appearance and function, they seemed to have neutered it for the casual crowd and "people who don't understand how to operate the PC"..There is not enough expletives in the English language that can properly express my irritation with this..So I'll say it in Hmong...

  • There are a couple other updates that re-enables KB3035583. Hiding this update will not stop it from downloading and installing since it shows up as important. You WILL get Widnows 10, and you will like it! I read that were were 4 updates for Windows 7 regarding GWX (Get Windows 10) and 3 in windows 8/8.1 and with these other updates are present too allows the GWX subsystem and service to run. I've read a lot of entertaining theories and things about this "free" windows 10 and sadly none of them surprise me. This is one gift horse I don't want despite what Microsoft thinks.

Unfortunate that Microsoft has become like the government. Bloated...dysfunctional and unyielding. Honestly windows hasnt really been good since Win 95. I wish i could have used that forever. Ahh the Win 95 days where when i opened the task manager and there was only 12 processes running.....now just idle at least 60.

    Daniel

Ah, yes, I remember it well!

I also remember when the Windows system-restore disk could fit on a single 3-1/2" floppy.  Now (for my system, at least), it's 7(!) DVDs!

It's the Microsoft business model: to constantly "improve" their products until they have rendered them utterly unuseable!

    Good grief.

Tonite I got a little popup saying windows updates are ready to install. So I go to control panel/windows update and all that's there is a notice to install windows 10 and a button to start installation. Long story short: Managed to uncheck win10 from updates and install the security updates. Rebooted, and when my icons started showing up I thought it was over and went into the kitchen for a few minutes.

Came back and the update window was on the screen, and the download of win10 was 85% complete!!! (It's almost 3 gigs and I"m short on space again--a forever problem). So I cancelled the download. Went to the list and unchecked win10, back to main update window and it said no updates selected. So I exited.

Checked again a few minutes later and windows10 update was checked AGAIN. Just like that KBxxxxxx that kept coming back I guess this is going to be my life until I get a new machine. uGH.

Seriously, this is sick. I think there were some nvidia problems otherwise I'd give in at some point. I just don't have time for this nonsense.

Yes, I noticed that this morning.  It just keeps rechecking that "optional" update for you.  The thing is I usually just let whatever is going to install install on Shut Down at night - I don't think I shall be doing that anymore.

There is so much mis-information on this thread.

But I will leave it alone as I know from experience that once people make up their minds about something it's nearly impossible to correct it.

But as for Windows 10 updates when I want to do an overnight render I go to the update center and do all updates then reboot before I begin.

    it's been working for me
