Think SSS
Thats one of those 'occult' answers, one of those 'read between the lines' answers? hehe.
(I'm joking with you).
That still doesn't tell me what it is or what it does.
Translucence is light going through stuff, like when back light shines through your ear. It's that. There's probably a map, but most maps are nothing more than copies of diffuse, or 'brighter version of regular skin'
Ah, the ole 'Gollum' thing with his ears from Lord of The Rings. ok, gotcha. Thanks much Mr. Timmins.William
Ideally you would have two sets of maps, one set for color and one grey scale set for strength.
SSS is Subsurface Scatter: as mentioned it is that translucent effect that one sees on skin. If you ever have seen waxwork figures of people, the wax is trying to simulate this translucence. Moreover, things like candles, food, leaves, liquids generally have an SSS component. The latest shaders such as HSS (Human Subsurface Shader), AoA's Subsurface Scatter, the Ubershaders and the iRay shaders have an SSS component; the Fred Winkler products often come with setting to adjust this. SSS is doucumented all throughout the Daz Studio site. Here is a link: http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/artzone/pub/tutorials/carrara/carrara-materials07
