So does anyone know (perhaps Spit?) if this set comes with Iray settings, or whether the PA set up settings for the pieces himself, without including them? And would this mean we should take each piece and use the Daz Studio Uber Iray shaders on them? Even the water, beach and trees?  Really like this set but afraid I won't be able to figure out how to "set the surfaces for iray" myself...  -Cathy

Most of the materials have the omUberSurface shader applied.  It appears to me the set was originally setup with omUberSurface shaders with some surfaces cherry picked and have the IrayUber shader applied.   In this render, I reviewed the materials of the renderered objects and listed the omUberSurface and IrayUber materials:

IrayUber Materials: Straw Roofs, Large Rocks, Dry Sand, Sea Surface, Barware glasses, liquid

omUberSurface Materials: All Plants, bark and leaves, Beach Chairs, Hut Stools, Hut Bases, Kayaks, Sea Foam, Wet Sand (by the sea edge), Sea Bottom, Umbrella Framework, Surf Boards, Fruits, coconuts, props on the bar hut.

I used the Iray sky-sun built in lighting and hid the four "sky" props, as it blocked the lighting.  Render with a GTX 980 took 14 minutes.  I added a light set and tried rendering with 3Delight, but the render came to sloooow (did I say sloooooooow?) crawl when it hit the transmapped palm trees which tied up the CPU and web browsing became unuseable.  I aborted the render.

Thank you for taking the time to find the information - I think this is not optimal.

I heard that it slows down Iray if there are non-Iray surfaces.

    Hello,

At the bottom of the product page it says:

    This product includes:

    • 1 DSON Core Installer
    • 1 General .OBJ Installer

Does anyone know what is meant by the "1 General .OBJ Installer" line? And if it means it comes as .OBJ files does it have associated material files? I know it comes with .DUF files but does it have material files that would allow it to be imported as a textured object in other programs?

    Thanks for any replies.

I don't see any .mtl files listed in the documents center.   http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/read_me/index/22811/file_list

I agree with Novica on the shader/retexturing issue - I enjoy using shader presets, but to make my own, I really have no clue how to do that - I am not very technical.  I find it's not easy for me to follow alot of the tutorials because they seem to assume that the reader/watcher has alot more experience and understanding than I personally have in this field.  I've tried following the Iray threads but so much of what's discussed there just goes over my head. sad  I really envy those of you who so easily know how to set these things up for yourselves, but I am far away from that point myself.

Although it would be appreciated, I would not expect a set to have both material types included.  It would sure be nice though if it would clearly state what it does include.     -Cathy

Completely agree.  I'm in the same boat.  I don't have much time to work in Daz, let alone have to learn so much extra that really feels terribly complicated.  I'd love to learn it all, but so much, especially Iray now, makes me eyes wobble in my head when I try to read on how to do all the customizations and such just to get it to work.  The new terminology and features are way to much for me these days.  I've been in IT for over 20 years... I'm tired... I just want to be a user now.  This means I just want it to work out of the box.  I've learned to now read the descriptions very carefully as to what renderer an item works with.  Not that I wouldn't love to go full-blown Iray, but it's something I just don't have the time or energy for.  I'm still trying to figure out Reality and Lux, which should give me similar results, but even that can be tough.

I like 3Delight and hope it sticks around for a long time because, as someone else said in a different thread, if they remove it, I'm left behind and won't upgrade, and my wallet goes with me.

Still love Daz though... pretty pictures are pretty!  smiley

It does say this at the bottom:

    • DAZ Studio Material Presets (.DUF)

Which I always assume mean 3delight mats?

Sometimes I'm never sure with the description any more - there's a few new items in teh store that only list Iray materials, and I don't understand why tehy don't have 3delight mats also, or whether it's actually a typo.

Have bought some products with "DAZ Studio Material Presets (.DUF)" and yes these are 3Delight materials

So, the products I have bought were signed with Iray Materials and DAZ Studio Material Presets (.DUF) so they had both, Iray and 3Delight but if you read the description of the product there is written that all textures are optimized for Iray Render. Well I really do not know if they are also for 3Delight. The description could have been better.

Judging whether or not the material is Iray or 3DL by whether or not it is a DUF file IS NOT going to tell you anything.  ALL Daz format material files are in DUF format.  That is the file format, since version 4.5 for ALL Studio USER files...materials, poses, etc!

Lindsey, have you tried the 3Delight render with progressive mode on? That may help with the transmapped trees?

Thank you for the suggestion! Progressive mode while rendering in 3Delight did improve the render speed immensely!

You're welcome! Now I just have to figure out why my *iray* progressive render doesn't work on some transmaps on my other renders for some reason, haha. :)

  • I have a request: Can Daz make it a requirement that all render engine presets are listed?

Also, it would be nice to be able to expand the addons>>shaders>>> DAZ to either 3Delight or Iray (or Luxus)

Sorry for delay, been busy. This is interesting. The objects in the scene have 3delight materials, the skies have iRay (for lighting). But load and render in 3delight and the skies render fine, just that you have to add your own lights.

But for changing the objects (furn, trees, etc) it's easy enough. After loading the scene select it in the scene tab, right-click and choose expand from selection. Then shift-click the last one in the list of things under the main scene selection, just before the skies. That will select all the objects  Then go to surfaces tab and do the same. Then apply the uber iray shader.

Or, you may prefer to select your camera and the view you want, then select the items that are visible in the scene and convert their surfaces to iray. And if you're not a purist, you may even try a render first then decide which items you want to convert to iRay. You may find the mere conversion doesn't change much because Studio does a good job of on-the-fly conversion it seems (depending, of course).

Thanks so much for replying Spit!  I wasn't aware it was that easy to correct textures for Iray - I knew you could apply the uber iray shader to SOME things (clothing for example) but didn't know it would work on - say - plant models with transmapped leaves, or the ground surface with the water plane, foam and sand - I thought each item would need to be tweaked separately - I've been reading the Iray threads and noticed how people have been struggling with skin settings since pretty much Iray first came to Daz Studio.  I was concerned that sort of research would need to be involved to determine what to do with each area. (Sand, trees, water, furniture, etc.)

Thanks again to you and to Lindsay for your input on this :)  I know the original poster was concerned that 3delight mats were not provided, I was kind of the opposite thinking that Iray was not provided but WAS used for the promos... I've bought sets before that had Poser mats only, and learned the hard way that mostly these don't look too good in Daz Studio, without tweaking which, unless you know what to tweak and how, pretty much renders the set as useless unless you have Poser.  I was concerned that this set used 3delight mats but had been specifically tweaked to look so great in Iray in the promos without providing the ability to achieve that look myself.  I'm really happy to hear that it's that easy to make this model useable in Iray.  -Cathy
