how do I make my custom workspace the default?
in New Users
I made a custom 2 screen woprkspace and it's saved but I'm wondering if there is a way to make it the default so that it loads that way when I open daz?

Does it not restart the way you left it? General Release or Beta? There was a problem saving the workspace in a previous version (I don't recall offhand which one).
General release. No it loads a different layout when I start it. It only takes a few seconds to switch, but it'd be cool if I didn't have to.
Are you allowing it to shut down on its own, ot force-quitting? Normally it should save the session layout (the current UI state) on exit and reapply it on load (unless you are overriding it with comand line options).
It just spontaneously started working properly today! Woohoo! It seems it took about 4 days of resetting but is now default! Thanks all!
I have the same problem. I made a custom workspace layout, and saved it, but it is impossible to get it the default worspace layout that is loaded when Daz opens. I tried with different names and also named the new layout "Default". Nothing works. I cannot find any way to set the default workspace layout under EDIT > PREFERENCES.
It isn't a default - when you close DS it saves the current state and loads that in again on starting. If that isn't happening you an use command line switches to help, assuming the problem isn';t a system or security software issue. Command Line Options [Documentation Center]
No, when I close DS it does not save the current workspace, that I created and called "000", because when I open DS again, the "Full Service [Beta]" is the workspace that is loaded. I do not know what you mean with "an use command line switches to help". Could you please explain?
It doesn't reload the named layout, it certainly should remember the state of the layout on closing. If you open a pane that is not normally open and leave it floating, then close and restart DS, is it still there or is it gone?
I tried to do what you said. I had DS open with my 000 workspace configuration. I opened a new pane that I do not ever use, SHADER MIXER, which was floating. Then I closed DS. The SHADER MIXER pane also was closed. Then I opened DS and what I got was the workspace "Full Service [Beta]". The SHADER MIXER pane was not there. Does this clarify anything?
How do you know what layout is being used? is it unchanged (which it may be if the sate of Shder Mixer was forgotten) or are you assuming that Window>Workspace>Seelct Layout will show the current workspace on the selection button (it won't, it just shows the top entry)?
Yes, I was assuming that Window > Workspace > Select Layout shows the current workspace on the selection button. You say it just shows the top entry. OK, but I know the 000 workspace that I had selected before and was "on" when I closed DS is not the workspace that is "on" when I restart DS, because my 000 has characteristics, for instance tabs, that are not present in the workspace that is loaded when restartng DS.
OK, so something is interfereing with saving the session layout (the state DS was in on closing, which should by default still apply to it on launchiing) or with reloading the settings on launch. If you go to
%appdata%/daz 3d/studio4/
what are the timestamps on the .dsx files there?
I see toolbars.dsx 10/13/2024. Is that a timestamp?
Yes, and should have been updated to a more recent date. There are also .dsx files for actions, customactions, menus, and toolbars.
This suggests that something is peventing DS from updating those files - you do shut down properly (using the exit command and letting it complete, not using Task Manager)?
I usually close DS by clicking on the x at the top right corner, sometimes I use the EXIT tab inside the FILE menu. Very rarely I used the Task Manager to close DS, if I did, it was months ago. I often open two or three instances of DS and in these occasions it is not uncommon that after a while one of them goes off by itself.
Instances with different names, not using command line swiitches to tell them to start clean or load a layout from a different instance?
Command line swiitches? No, I just click on the DS shortcut icon to open a new instance, though I sometimes use an app for that, it is a free app that somebody recomended in this forum, I forgot in what thread.
If you launch a new isntance it will have a unbique name and will save its settings to a unique subfolder of
%appdata%/daz 3d/
if you look in the right one of those you will find the saved layout, which will usually be loaded only by the corresponding instance. I suspect you app is actually the DS script which can be used to set up options and then either launch an instance or create a shortcut for launching it (which would use some of the command line switches I wa asking about).
I looked at
%appdata%/daz 3d/
and I saw the folders you mention, even I openned DS from them by clicking on the StartupScript.dsa. Then I generated a shortcut from it, and the problem seems solved! I get the workspace I want.
I see that checking the first four options in the popup window of the app to open a second instance (attached) I get a new instance in which the workspace is the same workspace I had in the opened instance. By the way, what is UI in "Copy Session UI"? Any use for the other options in the app window? Are there any instructiosn for that app available?
Thanks a lot!

The Session UI is the layout state saved when you close DS and loaded when you restart one using or accessing that instance name - those options are giving you a way to copy settings from another instance, which you can pick once they are checked.
