Low Polygon Hair

Hello everyone.

I use Daz mostly for Iclone animation and I'm really happy with most of the results but one of the things I'm having a lot of trouble with is hair.

Sometimes it seems like the hairs I end up using (especially Genesis) have a higher polycount than anything else on the model and it can start to cause a bit of a problem if there are many characters in the scene at the same time. I've tried decimating but hair takes to it the least well it seems, and can get real ugly real quick. Victora4 and David 4 Hair seem a lot more real-time friendly but are still not quite ideal, especially when the fit isn't perfect.

So my question is does anyone know of any Genesis 1 friendly low poly hairs that exist anywhere?

I also thought of adapting some community made Sims2 hairs (with permission) at times but I'm not good enough at model manipulation to get the hairs to even fit the Genesis scalp so if anyone has advice for such a procedure that'd be useful too. I have Hexagon but can install an old 3DS Max if anyone's advice is limited to that (though I'm trying to keep my comp free of things I don't use much anymore).

Any advice at all is appreciated, thanks.

I don't think I have seen a lot of low poly hair for the Daz figures. That is because most users are rendering prerendered stuff, so low poly isn't really good for that. Though someone may know of some examples.

Some tools are better at decimator at keeping the shape, so that is one option. Which decimation tool are you using? Daz decimator? If using decimator are you using the weighting functionality? It would allow you to keep some areas better than others.

Secondly I think learning how to manipulate the hair is going to be needed. Reason is whether you decimate the hair, or find low poly hair from elsewhere, you will need to fix it up a bit. When I reduce hair, I tend to send it to decimator to fix things up, like the scalp in particular.

Yeah, I didn't think there'd be any focus on making low poly Daz hair but thought it was worth asking anyway.

Yes, I'm using Daz Decimator. I haven't been able to get weighting to give me a much better result with hair, partly cause hair is so complex. Maybe I'll keep trying.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean there.

  • that was a typo. I mean to say hexagon. Or some modelling program. You can do some tough up worth that way.
