Luxus shadow edges showing sharp geometry
in The Commons
Hello, so there's this thing happening in Luxus which I do not understand. Not sure if this is covered in another discussion, if it is I haven't been able to find it so far. When I render in luxus I'm getting this weird—and nasty—effect that has, how can I put this, a non-smoothed look. Like I can see the faces and edges on the model. I don't really get this either, since it seems as if it's something that just started happening. I'll post a pic, and if anyone sees it and knows what it's all about and especially a cure then help would be awesome. The pic is shoulder. Where the light meets the shadow, the square looking biz going on is what I'm talking about. It rendered for about 3 hours.

Sadly I can not see your picture. But I guess, you are talking about the Subdivison Level? See here, how to increase Subdivision:
What kind of light are you using?
MN-150374, the subdivision may be the issue, thanks for the link. Going to try that. mjc10016, am using the preset 2 area lights that came with luxus.
Check the size of the area lights...because you will get that with very small lights.
Thanks for the tip about light size, I'll play with that a bit. Apparently it's not the subdivision level. It is set to level 1 already. Bringing it up to 2 only makes the weird square effect smaller, which i suppose would work as long as I never did any close up shots.
Greetings,
Wait, what are you tweaking subdivision *on*? Level 1 is not where you want to be, if it's a character. If I have a Genesis character, and the light is shining on them from the side, if I render in Reality or Luxus, they will cast stair-steppy shadows. I have to go to the character (e.g. Victoria 5) and set its subdivision in Parameters / General to 3 or 4, in order for it to be exported at the subdivision that 3Delight automatically promotes it to.
This is true for all the characters who have automatic subdivision in 3Delight; they have to be manually forced to subdivide before rendering in an external engine.
DAZ made it easier in Iray, but Luxus, Reality, Octane, etc., all need a little manual help.

Alright everyone, so I've tried a number of things since I was last on here. I found a thread about jagged light where the problem was due to more advanced materiels such as M5 or V5 would screw with Luxus wheras earliers such as M4 so on would not or some such. I'm still not really sure how that works since I thought luxus ignores daz materials unless they are converted manually to luxus, in wich case that should make everything work if you know how to tweak your settings. I tested this out anyway but it didn't seem to solve my issue, same problem cropped up with an M4 matt as the basis for the luxus matt.
I also tried increassing the size of my lights which yeilded no real change, so that's not the issue.
CypherFOX, that is a very interesting thing that I wasn't aware of, you've really turned on the lightbulb for me here. I didn't know 3Dleight subdivided it up that far. I have the feeling that you've given me the answer to my puzzle. Thank you for that info, I'm going to make those adjustments and see how it looks .
If you assign Luxus/LuxRender Materials to a surface the 3Delight Settings will be ignored. If you leave a surface as it is, Luxus takes the 3Delight settings and will do a autoconversion.
All surfaces will be converted to LuxRender Materials. Either you do it yourself by assigning the LuxRender Materials or Luxus does it in an automated process.
I see. In that case I'm safe, I always assign the Luxus mats myself. Apparently the issue was the subdivision after all, just hadn't been bringing it up high enough like CypherFOX was talking about. I tried bringing it up to lvl 4. Things are looking satisfactory now. Thanks everyone for your input on this, I appreciate it a lot.
