Where can I find figure cloth/drapes/sheets?

Hi!

I'm new to DAZ and this forum and so far I've been enjoying myself immensely. smiley

I'm looking for a particular piece of clothing, namely a sort of antique cloth/drape/sheet - the type of cloth the Renaissance masters used in their figure paintings. I've included a couple of pictures to show you what I mean. I've been searching the shop and various other places, but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

/Ola

One thing you could try is Dynamic sheet. Though I'm not sure how well it works unless you get the Dynamic control panel (which is $50).

It might be way easier to do something like that in Poser or Carrara, and there may be conforming options that also work.

  • Thank you for reply! This is helpful to me - now I have something to research further. I'm going to look into Dynamic Sheet and possibly Dynamic Control Panel. I think I will wait with Poser/Carrara for now - at least until I'm less of a 3D newbie. laugh

There's this in the store (actually a whole line of items by Jepe in a similar vein)

While I really like Dynamic clothing for certain things... using Jepe's stuff is going to be WAAAAAAAAY easier.

Usually for stuff like that I'd just export a posed model to Blender, add a subdivided plane and go to it...but if I were doing regular renders needing this, I'd seriously consider Jepe's sheets, instead.

  • Thanks for that suggestion, mjc1016. Do you know if Jepe's stuff will let me set the poses, or are the sheets fixed to certain poses? I can't really tell from the product page.

  • By the way, the WonderSheetz look fantastic! yes

Dollars to donuts, just about all products like these will be for specific poses only. The sheet morphs to conform to the pose of the human figure. This is one thing to learn Blender or any tool that makes it possible to push one mesh against another.

I dig your username -- though wasn't Bouguereau a bit later than the Renaissance? He and my great grandfather, who was an impressionist living in France in the late 1800s, would not have gotten along!

+1 to this one. It's a 10 minute job to get this result in poser cloth room. All it needs is a primitive plane and any pose you like. You could then export as an object and render in Daz. For me, the lack of the cloth room is probably the only really annoying limitation of Daz compared to poser.

You can use optitex dynamics in DS, there is a plug in for it if you want more control but it's not needed to try it out.  For what you're doing you might want it but try the free stuff first before plunking down the cash for the plug in.  There is a set of dynamic building blocks basically in the shop http://www.daz3d.com/controllable-dynamic-shapes but again, try the free stuff first and see if it'll work for you. There is 16 pages of freebies to try here: http://www.optitex-dynamiccloth.com/FreebieDownload01.php ; One important thing to note, Opittex dynamics can't be scaled, so you'll need a big sheet to do what you want, the other options don't have that limitation.

Disclaimer:  I don't know for certain dynamics are working properly in DS 4.8, hopefully someone who knows for sure can chime in.  If it's not you're other options are: Blender as mentioned (that's free and offers a lot of control, but a big learning curve - worth the time to learn if you have the time, sooo many things you can do with it); Poser (not as much control, fairly easy to use, but have to buy it - older versions can be picked up for pretty cheap usually. Genesis 2 works well in Poser 8 (Poser Pro 2010)+ and any version over 5 has the dynamic ability, Genesis 3 doesn't work in Poser so you'd have to work with obj files and export back to DS for her);  or Marvelous Designer (utterly fantastic, fairly intuitive to use, but quite pricy)

As far as getting help with stuff..  all pretty even I think.  There are quite a few people who use Blender and Poser here, A good number of us PAs use Marvelous Designer and a few non PAs also - and they have their own forums with lots of helpful people, not as many people use dynamics in DS but if you're gonna find 'em they'll be here.

Dynamic clothing works fine in 4.8, just tested animated drape (I've done some static drapes lately, so I knew those worked).

It also depends on how many renders you're planning to do. If its just a few, than fiddling with daz cloth or using one of jepe's cloth props would probably do you. If your planning on doing a lot of renders it makes more sense to use something like blender (or carrara?) which will have more of an initial learning curve, but once you have the methodology down are much more controllable, and relatively fast.

I always recommend learning blender. And in this case I can personally verify that it makes some great Bouguereau-esque dresses (this was actually made out of a 2 rectangles)

Cheers Tobor! You're right, Boug' was certainly later, he was one of the last truly academic painters of the 1900s, before impressionism completely took over. I like them all though - Zorn, Monet, Degas, Boug' et al.

  • j cade,

that's a gorgeous image! I plan to do quite a few renders actually, so now that I have three votes for Blender in here, maybe I should look into that software.

I actually didn't know Blender was freeware! Learning curves generally don't scare me as I'm pretty dedicated once I decide I want to learn something. The problem is I also paint in oil, so it's hard for me to find time for all the 3D stuff I want to learn, I try to keep up by reading these forums and watching YT videos before I go to sleep. But, yeah, Blender seems to be way to go for me...

Thanks everyone for the information, it has been of great help for me.

I'm wondering how the heck J Cade pulled that off. Very nice. ;)

I actually meant the lighting and render, which looks very paintlike
