Subdividing some, but not all, nodes of an object?

I assume the answer is "no", but just in case: Is there any way to subdivide certain nodes within an object rather than all of them? I periodically run into objects that are too low resolution to use for closeups because curves are a rather obvious series of angles, and while subdividing works great to smooth out these curves, it also often does horrible damage to other parts of the model and thus I can't do it.
(Although it just now occurred to me I wonder if I could load two copies of the model and hide the bad parts but keep the good parts of each... although they might not always or ever line up since subdividing changes the shape.)
