Same Light, Different Shadows.

Ok, I decided after rendering a scene, I wanted to change the texture of the ground. I did this by swapping out 2 maps, a Base Color Map and A glossy diffuse map (and as I type this, I see I missed a base bump map, so that might answer this). That was the only change made. no sliders done, no dome movement.. just swapping the maps.

With the first version, there's some clearly defined shadows from the various objects in the scene.  With the second, there's not.  I tried doing a render with the iray default floor to make shadows I could composite in with photoshop, and as you see there's only the one shadow in the corner, so I'm not sure the floor texture even has anything to do with this, since it isn't in that picture (colors adjusted to emphasize shadow).

Lited with just the iray dome with a hdri image on it.

Any ideas on what's going on? Could the bump map I only just now figured out be the cause (though that doesn't explain the 3rd picture)

Try this HDRI, if you haven't already:

The sun is north (0 degrees) in relation to the default camera, so turn the dome 180 degrees to have it straight on. For a side angle, subtract or add 15-25 degrees.

This HDRI will give you much more distinct shadows so you can test this part. I see a dim shadow in the center image; the shadow on the right image simply looks like the object is floating above the ground, so the shadows are more indistinct.

That doesn't really get into why the shadows would be different between the two...

The shadow on the right (black and white) is the same as what's showing up in the center.

The thing is the shadows are too indistinct to really know what's going on. Use a more defined light source so you can better see the shape of the shadows. That might give you a clue what's happening.

The shadow on the left doesn't have a point where it meets the object. That suggests the object is not on the ground.
