Poser compatibility
in The Commons
I have been a DAZ customer for years. I have probably spent thousands dollars on the wonderful resources available here. But, I notice that more and more products are no longer compatible with Poser as well as the new characters Gen3 and V7. Is it a deliberate policy ? Does it mean that Poser users are non longer welcome here ? Does it mean that we will have to make a difficult choice : if you want to use DAZ resources, drop Poser, or keep Poser and forget DAZ ? I just want to clarify.

This has been discussed ad nauseatum already in varius threads....

To sum up:
PAs make content that will sell best. If, or of not they make their content Poser compatible (investing time into making extra Poser textures, etc), is up to them. As various PAs have stated, DAZ is not telling them to drop Poser support (or including it, for the matter), it is a personal business choice of the PA.
As far as G3/V7 is concerned, she uses a vastly different technology from what is inside Poser, and based on that you would have to completely recreate her to make her compatible with Poser. DAZ Studio is plain and simply developing into a different direction from Poser, so you could interpret this as a "deliberate" change. (But personally, I don't see why DAZ3D is forced to go into the same direction as Smith Micro with their product developement. They are their own company, after all.)
Whether or not Poser will ever change their policy and support a technology used DS, is up to Smith Micro. If they don't then that will mean that the gap between both softwares will incrase, and that with the content that is specifically for G3 and Iray, Poser will be of no use as it will never be compatible. As simple as that.
This reply just reflects the opinion of the person who posted it even if it tried to "sum up" the situation.
I think that an officuial answer posted by a DAZ staff member would be welcome. It is my opinion but also the only thing that I will post in this thread. Some people know why...
Anyway, as a Poser user, I wish you all the best, Simbad! :)
Actually, I think Lee_lhs response quite accurately summarises the situation.
Why drop Poser? I still use both. I've been a long-time Poser user, though I actually started with D|S first. At that time, I found Poser's UI was more to my way of thinking, but with the recent added features of D|S, I've learned to become bilingual. I prefer Poser for certain things, and D|S for others.
My hard drive has 2TB of space on it; plenty for both programs. D|S makes it very easy to share the same runtimes with Poser. Since D|S is free, there is no reason to pick just one or the other. Not to be argumentative, but I think the proposition of having to ditch one to go with the other simply isn't valid.
That said, Poser has had relatively few improvements over the last few generations, and maybe this will encourage Smith Micro to invest a little more in development. It still uses a (IMO crippled) Flash-based widget to display content. And long-standing bugs, like crashing when it suddenly can't find a texture it previously had loaded, have needed to be fixed for years. I applaud the potential of a strong competitor. If Smith Micro wants to play, it'll mean a better Poser, so it's win-win for us.
I don't think you'll ever get an official comment from DAZ staff for the simple reason that DAZ doesn't have a stance on this. PAs are free to submit content for DS or Poser or both, and no one at DAZ tells us what program we should use. So there is no official 'party line'.
My personal feeling is that DS has surged far ahead of Poser in recent years (especially in terms of content creation tools), and with the introduction of Iray, the advantages of using DS have now become even greater, both to the user and to PAs (who obviously want to see their products look as good as possible). The problem now is that in order to support both programs, 3 different versions are needed - Iray, 3Delight and Poser. From a content creator's POV, that becomes almost unsustainable.

What Mac said!
I own and use both, but mostly use DS as it has most of what i need for my workflow.
2TB, that's just about enough for V4's shoes!
And at what point did Poser start supporting DAZ content?
To the OP,
DAZ3D and Smith Micro are two seperate companies who each had to make choices that they felt were best for thier companies. SM choose NOT to support DSON natively which means they dont want to go in the same direction as DAZ3D. How can two people walk together unless they agree? So DAZ3D choose to make the DSON importer for Poser. It works but its not a perfect solution as native support. Only SM can make Poser support DSON natively. The fact that there is no support for Poser for Genesis 3 Female out of the box just goes to show that it is no longer a worth while effort. DAZ3D NEVER had an obligation to make Poser products. It was just the program they choose to support when they started off but times change. And to be fair, the figure is only a mesh. NO technology is contained in the mesh. The program determines the technology available to the mesh (figure). The DUF files or CR2 files are just user facing files that tell the software about the mesh and how it can use the technology of the program. If the technology from one program is not available in another program then the mesh cannot be expected to operate in the exact same way as it does in the first.
ssgbryan, where do you get your evidence that DAZ3D was sold? And last I checked DAZ Staff frequent the forums all the time.
"Oh, and wilfred, don't hold your breath on seeing a DAZ staff member here - since the company was sold, they don't come by anymore."
I am assuming your refering to Chris selling out and that was many years ago. There has been staff in these forums regularly since that time.
At this point poser compatability with figures like G3 are in SM/Posers court and it is them that you should be asking if you think it is something you want. I suspect though that they will choose to go a different direction.
A few days ago Nerd3D announced some kind of Cycles embedding in Poser; this move does certainly not improve the compatibility between Poser and Studio otherwise licensing Iray would have been a no brainer. With this precedent, I consider the hypothesis of SM adding dual quaternions skinning to Poser very unlikely.
Four...depending on how 'Poser compatible' you want to make it...
Six actually if you split out the 3delight shaders (default, HSS, AoA)
Studio seems to have a much shorter release cycle than Poser. Daz has introduced a whole bunch of technologies since the last Poser release. iRay, Gen3 are the most recent, but things like Instances (DS4.5. Was that after PP2014? not sure) are also not supported by Poser.
In theory, the next Poser is due sometime this Autumn. Who knows what it'll contain. Maybe it will support DSON and other technologies. Maybe it'll have something even more killer (I know for sure if they include a rich Carrara-style surface replicator, I'd be all over it like a rash, as the saying goes).
I don't think we can 100% say that SM is not going to support new DS stuff until we see what they produce.
As an interesting note, I've noticed that other stores whose products seemed to be more Poser specific in the past now seem to be selling more and more Genesis 1, 2, and 3 content.
