Import STL file

tomgetomge Posts: 19

Stl files seem to have gotten popular because of 3D printing, but I haven't bumped into them before.  Now I have one I would like to bring in to a scene (New Horizons from NASA 3D site.)  Does anybody have advice on how to translate such a file since I can't just import it?

I'm not by my computer at the moment, but I'm pretty sure Blender can import STL... Either that or there is a plugin script that will allow it to.

You can import the .stl into Blender and then export out a .obj, for use in DS or Poser.

Blender is a Free 3D modeling program available here:  https://www.blender.org/download/

Blender can be used to convert a number of file formats including LWO, 3DS and DAE.

You may find this info about import/export scripts interesting:  http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Extensions:2.6/Py/Scripts/Import-Export

    I hope this helps.

Yep, blender will do it, but keep in mind that that particular model is in parts with no textures
