D|S timeline not storing keyframes

I'm sure this is a matter of my not using the feature correctly, rather than D|S not working right.
I am trying to use the Timeline for a simple multi-pose storage. I don't use it for animation. This follows a technique I've used for years in Poser, where one file stores 10-30 poses of a figure. For this to work, every frame must be a keyframe, or else the program inbetweens the poses, which I don't want.
I can't seem to make the same thing work in the Timeline. I do this:
1. Start on frame 0. I click on the + Keyframe icon to make sure it's a keyframe (though, by definition, it should always be a keyframe). Pose the figure.
2. Go to the next frame, and click on the + Keyframe icon for that one. The keyframe marker appears. Set a new pose.
At this point, I can usually go back to the first frame, and my initial pose is still there. But eventually, after doing a few more of these keyframe poses, it "forgets" there are keyframes, and applies indetween poses. The keyframe markers may disappear, or they may show, but one or more may no longer be keyframes. The frame shows a tween pose instead. This can happen anywhere along the timeline, and is not predictable. It happens on every scene file.
I did purchase animate2 as an alternative, but I find its UI cluttered, so I haven't tested it as thoroughly to see if the same issue is there. This needs to be click-click-done, and the Timeline offers that simplicity.
I must be misunderstanding how keyframes work in D|S. Is there another setting to make, or a step I am missing?

Answering my own question here, after more research I think my problem is that I have not been specific about which actor/body part is selected when I make the keyframe. There's only one figure in the scene, but it's possible the root node was not always selected. Will gie this a whirl...
