I think I like him, not 100% sure yet. On some promos he looks really good, on others he looks a little potato-y.

His navel looks very strange. And baked-in scars? Come on, DAZ, get your BLEEP together.

I don't think I'll get him since I already have Christian,Vladimir, and Skalde.

But all complaining aside, I do think he's a nice character.

I really like him, alot. The only thing I wish is that the scars were an option but there are still a lot of uses for him.

I picked up the bundle. I mostly wanted the clothing. I can't say the character Greaves thrills me. His lashes and brows, don't look great, his skin is okay, but I think he really needs HD. Releasing  a g8.1 without it is a crime.

Eh, I've seen better. I hope the armor is worth it.

There is an HD addon available; it just is not part of the bundle. If it had been included in the bundle for the $51 price I might have been more interested.

Interesting. Thanks. Too bad, that wasn't included, and I didn't see it in the store when I checked out.

I would definitely prefer characters and all their parts be bundled together.

  • For Luthbel content, the price is kind of irrelevant? Luthbel outfits cost more regardless if it has the "Daz Originals" branding on it... but you end up with a certain quality for the cost, so in the end, there's a worthwhile trade. Yes, you "need" to buy in extras for the bundle, but that's a fabulous price for the outfit alone.

To me, between the character and the Luthbel outfit, it's solidly in the "Yes" pile.

I don't mind the scars. In fact, it helps make this character worth it. We're at the point of extreme saturation with characters? Or at least I am?
I want more characters who carry unique stuff with them, but that is my opinion.

i thought the character sort of cool, but it appears the HD is needed to actually get the scars to stand out? The bundle itself is a bit high for a character and 2 items and a pose. But hey, we have a choice No one twisting our wallet to buy anything. Or if you don;t like the character, or whatever buy the clothing, or the pose, or the character. Tons of options.
The $1 deal is pretty good. I'll but 3 weapons i dont need. just in case i will someday.

I think it's good to make a distinction between what an item is "worth" (which for luthbel outfits is pretty much whatever they want to charge honestly) and "at what price can I fit this item in my monthly budget"

"Worth" is a pretty tenuous concept. Especially when we're talking digital content that can be duplicated infinitely.

The cost at which they're sold can't be said to really represent "worth" either since that's obviously not what the creator is getting paid for their efforts, but just a fraction of it.

It also is mostly what is the worth to the purchaser. Luthbel items are great and obviously very well made but I do very few scifi renders so for example today's outfit is not worth as much to me as it would be to someone who would use it a lot.

  • Well, I'm not currently in a sci fi mode, but this was enough in my wheelhouse where I wanted to play with the new toys.

Still playing around with Senator Greaves.

Yes, scars are part of the skin. No option for scarless, but that does not matter to me. I got him for the scars.

There are 2 face options (brows on/off).

Female genitalia textures (OMG, what a lady she would make)... plus cut/uncut male genitalia.

To me, the SSS is way too dark. Maybe for others' lights, it's fine, but not for me. I'm going to have to lighten them all before I use them.

Comes with fiber brow, stubble, and hulihee stash.

I think he's a fun character. He's not your uber "realistic" pile of sex figure (say, like Big George, lol).
    He's a neat, stylized dude.

I'll render something while I work out, I guess.

He has a lot of great details.  I especially love the scar going through the brow.  I love me some scars hehe.  :)

  • Okay, finally rendered and put him through some post-render work.

His skin is too dark for my setup. I had to change all the diffuse and SSS maps to get what I wanted/expected.

This almost made hot coffee come out of my nose!! - but well worth the morning laugh.

I will pass on the character. His skin is rubbery looking to me, and the hair... eesh. I will, however, get the Luthbel outfit, weapons, and add-on textures.

I'm not that fond of this one. Soon as I saw it, I said several "I don't likes" I think his chest looks weird. men have nipples, but the characters look mashed, or have been removed and the skin is scarred. Skin looks too play-doughy to me, like he'd giggle if you poked him in the belly. The texture on the knees look weird. His fingers look square and too thin for his frame. Girly fingers almost. For a beefy tough guy based on his scars, why are his hands so tiny and feminine looking? Looks like he uses hand lotion more than a AK47. So, I am thinking he's going to be hard pass for me. Not unless during a holiday sale down the road he ends up in the 9.99 bargin bin. Newp, sorry.

Edit: I'm sorry but when I see the image of the new Sci-Fi clothing item, my mind goes to Sting in Dune...I love Luthbel items but I can't do this new item, not now at least LOL, sorry.

I got a 10% off the cart orange banner yesterday, but there was nothing I liked about the character other than his eye scar. And I have a few of those already. So, I got the armor and textures with some wishlist items.

  • His skin IS weird. I don't like the default tone, I had to go in and edit the maps.

Yes, there is a literal boob crease. Pretty annoying unless you're dealing with well-endowed female figures. Maybe boob/pectorals sag. Since it's all Normal map, it'll be a pain to edit it out. So, boob sag in the interim.

I have to go in and edit all the specularity dials to get him looking shiny. Otherwise, his skin is unusually absorbent/matte.

I still like him, but he needs a lot of work, IMO.
A LOT a lot for a base character.

These renders almost make it look like there's a strange contradiction between his weathered skin and his seemingly much younger shape frown

  • The shape is different, also. Stylized.

However, mine is also blended with a little Ollie and Ashan. 70% Senator Greaves in the mix, however. A little Ollie and Ashan doesn't take away his overall feel at that mix. (Although it did help to de-emphasize that belly button.)

Maybe I'll try him with Floyd or Mr. Woo next time, I guess.

    ...

Looking at the HD... do the HD morphs really emphasize the boob crease? Not a big fan of that.

  • Okay, mixed him up with Floyd 8 and Aldo.

  • xyer0xyer0 Posts: 6,374

Thanks for the renders and mixes. He still looks like Generic 8 Male, even with the other dial-ins.

  • I found the initial bundle offering rather unattractive (to say the least):
    - No extras.
    - No advantages for buying the HD or other extras.
    - Small.
    - High priced.
    - Only 20% off for purchasing one particular bundle before and not counting in anything else.

Therefore I ended up just buying the armor and its textures with the extra 15% offer on Sunday.

Glad to see a new product from Luthbel. I'm glad Daz got him onboard. Another cartoon male. But I'm getting him since I have a storyline with the one-eyed Horus follower club, and he'll be good for that. Too bad I can't see his images because of the new product widescreen display distorting the images.

He's not a cartoon, just really really grizzled.

The skin is grizzled (yet rubbery). But the morph is toon (stylized or G8M with a nose/ear morph), although the original (bottom) was more realistic.

  • HylasHylas Posts: 5,260

I don't see what's toon about him either, but eye of the beholder, etc.

The more I look at him, the less I like his head morph.

His body morph is ok but the navel is weird.

His skin seems pretty good actually, but that's not enough to make me buy him. I guess that's that.

I like the scars and skin detail... but to get what I had for output, I had to modify the Diffuse and SSS maps because they're super dark for my usual lighting. I also totally changed the specularity dials because the default setting is really flat and adds to that rubbery feel. (I think he's built for much higher intensity lighting than I usually use, myself.)

The boob crease is another weird thing, and it looks like the HD dials emphasize it, so that's also weird. I can kind of hide it with saggy pectoral boobs, though. (EDIT: Note to self, try messing with his Body normal map & combining with Floyd's to cut out the boob crease.)

The morph... I would agree that it doesn't add all that much compared to, say, a Floyd or a Christian.

I like the skin quite a bit (after modifications). The brows that match the skin? Great. He needed work to get him useful per my normal setup, though. I don't know that a newbie Daz user would know how to do all that. He's probably worthwhile for experienced users who want those skin details... but I had to put in some work. A lot of GIMP and not a small amount of dial spinning in the Surfaces tab (based on my learned experience with those settings).

He's less useful to n00bz who simply want to throw him on the screen next to Kanade or something. You're just not going to get the same performance out of the box compared to Babina, Kanade, etc. It might be frustrating for a true noob.

    Haha, yes.

    I erased his boob crease.

I used Floyd 8's Normal map (Torso) as the bottom layer, and put Senator Greaves on top... then, I just erased the hard underboob lines on Senator Greaves' Normal map (Body).

(Floyd 8 is G8M, so that Surface is Torso... but Senator Greaves is G8.1M, so you use the Body Surface instead.)

I really ought to get the British cavalry sabre from the other store...

Perhaps, but its not something to really "grieve" over since you could probably use morphs to shape those areas into something more acceptable and/or edit the textures if you have the software.

Never been a fan of judging a character by what the site's marketing department has decided to include in the bundles. Especially as so few people are able to afford teh budnles, regardless.

However, as it's been brought up here... I did purchase the futuristic suit, specifically because of the textured expansion. Without it, I would have really wondered why it was meant to imply military use, yet was lit up like a big 'PLEASE SHOOT ME' Christmas tree! The alternative textures make it look a lot more pratical.

Although, even with those, I have to wonder what the inclusion of those large circular joints are on the sides of the thigh-clad armour. It's not as if they fit onto an exoskeletal mounting and they're located much further down than the hips. Wonder if the creator originally intended for them to rotate on something, then moved them down.
