...OK tonight's deal is a good example of what I find disappointing.
The top banner on the store page is advertising a Birthday Sale for Zev0' where everything in the catalogue (except New items) is 65% off. OK, I'm interested as there are a couple items on the old wishlist I'd like to get. Nice, got couple good deals during last month's Faveral' B'day sale on sets that were on the WL. However, before I clicked on the tile, in the almost invisible fine print (as it is in pink on a white background) I saw::
Needless to say my excitement faded away immediately, as the lowest priced items in the "Share the Love" category are textures for the skimpwear on the list that I'll never purchase. So much for getting Shape Shift Bundle along with Skin Overlay for M5/V5 at 19$ and change. The only interesting item in the entire category is the Pose Builder for G2 - which, at the new release price of 25$, makes the whole deal too expensive at this time.
Interesting, I did not think it was possible to buy the same item twice.
Interesting, I did not think it was possible to buy the same item twice.
The possibility is there - even when the button says "purchased" - or you could only one Gift Certificate in your whole life. ;)
The whole idea for BOGOs if you ask me is to put only older DOs into GET categories and, of course, PA items into BUY. This way, PAs should get more exposure and even the normal introductory discount would be attractive to the customers (of course, if the release was nice). How many people buy V3 or M3 nowadays? Or M2 who seems to be vaulted and thus many attractive items are rendered useless?
I've got a dream: DAZ Veteran's Day. Take the older toys to play.
Cool with me, it will save me money since I won't buy much if anything.
i dislike (HATE!) the punches also.
Why not just a scrolling banner of more PA flash sales like we have now, I LOVE those!!
Punches... As per the signature %-P.
The worst case is female "fantasy" skimpwear. If punches were given for male stuff and animals... I'd surely collect more.
...seems some feel I only will be satisfied if it goes back to the "good old days'. While that would be nice, I know it wont happen which is why I concluded my post a couple pages back with:
To add, "Of course provided one of the trigger items is something reasonably affordable that will be used."
Greetings,
The Punch Sales actually end up being pretty good, from an economic distribution standpoint. DAZ can optimize certain vendors around start-of-week vs. end-of-week, with the understanding that folks who start the week are going to get perhaps fewer sales, but keep a higher percentage (because nobody has points yet). This lets them give those spots to certain vendors. (E.g. Stonemason, who typically kicks off many of the sales...) It also lets them backfill in new vendors at the end of the week, so folks might take a risk on them if they have a high punch-card discount, and lets customers find new favorites.
Also I've seen DAZ put DO's on Saturday, giving really deep (w/PC pricing) discounts on their own stuff to folks who've built up punchcards, so folks feel they're getting their money's worth. (Buying something for 75% off is a pretty strong way of making folks feel they've 'beat' the system.)
That all said, I'd bet back catalog sales (beyond the 60 day period) are the bread-and-butter of March Madness, though. I've been unemployed for a bunch of months, and just returned to the workforce with a nice bump in salary, so I'm looking 45 days out at stuff that I just couldn't afford, and I've got a 'hit list' of back-catalog items that I really, really want to show up in 50% off discounts during March Madness.
Sickleyield mentioned in a post recently that February was one of their slower months, historically... I wonder how much of that is folks keeping their 'powder dry' for March.
As for sales types, I vaguely recall a snowball format which was like punches, except that if you bought one of the previous day's items, you got 50% off the next day's item(s). I remember that working shockingly well for me a few times, but it strongly encouraged folks to buy-and-return, which is probably why the punch-card format has the rules it has. It was also DO only, IIRC.
...and in the end, that's the situation. DAZ can experiment with all kind of sales, when it's their own money on the line (bought out DO items), but they need something that's consistently popular, brings people back day after day, incurs a sense of urgency in the majority of the buying populace, and leaves buyers feeling like they scored a deal and PAs feeling like their stuff was sold fairly.
Simple, flat discounts don't do it. No urgency. This isn't 'book lern'n', it's the way it works. You're free to call folks lemmings, or whatever, but people WANT to feel like they gamed the system...they got a better-than-average discount, that something THEY did affected the total.
BOGO/BOG½ doesn't feel fair to the PAs, especially those coming the day after a highly sought after product.
There's a lot of aspects to balance, and while I don't always like punch card sales, I can appreciate how they do a fairly good job of balancing a lot of that out. There may be a better approach that hits all the right notes, but I can say that if there is, it's not likely to simplify the sales. :)

p.s. My Seriously Wild Ass prediction is that this year, they're going to have a punch card 'prize' which is a credit towards a custom 3D print of your own scene. This lets them keep the first batch of customer-driven 3D Prints to a relatively small amount (the folks who can afford to hit the high points on a punch card), and dovetail with an announcement that they're going to work with customers to print their own scenes.
How about a "barter" system. One bushel of potatoes for the latest skimpware or monster? A peck of apples for some architecture or the contents of an armory. How about a pair of mules for an update to Carrara?
No, I guess it wouldn't work. Shipping would be a problem. 8-s
SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!!!! :)
For me, I always appreciate when you can have at LEAST two days with the discounted prices, to see if you want to add that to your punches. I always wait till the second day so I can see what the new items are in the next batch, as it helps me get an idea if I am going for punches.
I am one of the ones who buy things and will find a way to use it. Kit bashing, prop bashing (using props in scenes they aren't intended for, combining props using opacity settings) are easy. Layering slinky clothing with other shirts and apparel make those outfits usable, so it's all in the planning. If it drops the discounts and I can get a lot of stuff that's wishlisted, I'll think about doing it.
I do NOT like the buy from this group, get from this group, if it's pretty limited. Particularly for those of us who own thousands of items, and there's not a lot of newer stuff. And prices do seem to be going up, as mentioned in many other threads, (some of the base figures prices went up after release, not cool at all IMO) so people having to buy things to get other things are going to be the ones who get left out (edit) if they are on a budget.
My solution is to have a month long reward system, like Rendo, where your money spent earns you credit but you can use it ANY TIME during that month. It needs to be a higher percent than Rendo though- that's why I don't shop there as much as here frankly.
...if MM turned out to be a punch sale, then people like myself get "punched out" because the cost to acquire the punches needed effectively nullifies the value of the reward that is offered. Again, given the average price of new releases, to get 15 punches would average around 250$. That's almost half my bleedin' rent. in one week, just to get a 15% discount which, if I don't use it before the next week begins, is gone. So if the PA Items I am wanting to get off my wishlist for do not show up in that week as part of the sale, it's "tough luck, thank you for the 250$". Wash-rinse-repeat.
At least, as I mentioned earlier, a BOGO like sale does not require as hefty "buy in" to participate, of course this only works provided there is a good selection of new items offered each day and it appeals to a variety of "tastes" and budgets rather a single one (unlike the most recent offer this week which pretty much only had skimpwear and a fairly expensive resource as the triggers).
Flat discounts do work if, like in past MMs, a featured PA's catalogue is only up for day or so (I like the 36 hour idea someone else mentioned as it gives all time zones a chance) and not a week or the entire month. Pretty much the only time I make a purchase these days is when something I want is offered at a "flat discount" (Fastgrab, Flash Sales, or PA birthday Sales) or as a PC item.
The recession hit a lot of us hard and we yet to feel any real sense of "recovery". Many of us are working for less (in some cases a lot less) than we did before the downturn. Meanwhile "necessary" expenses like housing, transportation, clothing, food, and utilities have continued to go up. It makes a lot of us have to be more selective in our purchases, which is why, for us, these new "sales gimmicks" don't work.
See I am a strange bird if I get a flat rate discount on something I feel like a winner. It is clear as far as DAZ is concerned that those of use who can not spend a lot are in the minority.
And I would not spend a ton of money for a 3D print as a bonus in the end for the simple fact that so many of the give a ways were received broken.
And just like the Birthday Sale on Zevo, I got my e-mail and was like YES 65% off then I saw I needed to buy a new item to qualify and the sales the PA would have gotten from me went right out the window. But again seems there are very few of us whom that happens too and thus our lost sales don't mean a whole lot especially when they seem to be generating enough money from others and I can't blame the PA there either they like me have to eat and pay bills.
OH trust me I understand the model and I am glad those who participate in those models feel like they are getting a bargain but for me it is a no win situation and as such I bow out of the sales and put my few dollars back in my pocket. If that means I have to wait until the fall PA sale to get what I have wish listed then I just will roll the dice and wait and hope that the PA items I want are still available.
Is it worth it to me to wait for a flash sale or a straight sale yes.
...+1
(I fraggin' hate Magento, can't do a simple "thank you" or a "+1" anymore)
How about just a straight up store-wide sale with x % off added for every y number of items in your basket? Its not flashy with punches and things (though there are many things you can add to jazz it up with new releases, freebies, coupons etc) but it gives every PA money for their item and incentive to buy anything and everything. We just want to fill our catalogs and will unload big cash if the price is right.
...that's basically what I refer to as a "Progressive Discount" sale (buy one at 30%, two at 40% three at 50%, etc). Others call that a "snowball" sale as the discount increases the more items you put in the cart.
Doesn't help those on tight budgets (who really need the discount) like a "flat discount" sale does.
Agreed with Kyoto Kid, it is not that everyone can unload $250 a month. Say an average item is $15. Three would be $45. That's just one day. Even when given a half-off discount, it is still $22,50 - for one day?
Of course, the best would be to give a variety of options appilcable to the same item, so that each customer can take their picks, but it is doubtful the system would handle it.
