Compatibility and Models or Do I Need a New Wardrobe?

So I was looking at newer models such as V4.2 (Base) and I think all my clothes, hair, etc. are for Genesis/Gen2.
Will any of that be compatible or will I need to start all over getting Hair, Shoes, and stuff?
That would be a monumental "hidden" cost for upgrading models.

V4 isn't "newer" than Genesis or Genesis 2, nor would you be "upgrading" if you got her.

V4 was before Genesis. If you decided to buy V4, then yes, you'd have to get her clothes, characters, hair etc.

V4 is indeed the older model with Genesis 2 being the latest.

    Thanks! (and you,too Jakiblue)

    This link is very helpful.

So maybe I am not understanding a basic bit here; is Genesis 2 and/or Genesis compatible with all the ones that say Gen/Gen2 under their names?

V4 still gets a lot of support at Rendo and RDNA. They're primarily Poser type stores, with not as much support for DS as here (well, Rendo's got a lot of DS support compared to RDNA)

So if you decided to buy V4, you'd get a LOT of stuff for her shopping there. There's not as much support still for V4 here at DAZ3d but there is of course, an EXTENSIVE back catalogue for her here. If you really did want her, wait till there's some MEGA MAJOR sale so you can get her dirt cheap.

But if you're working with Genesis and Genesis 2 and happy with that, there's no point really in going backward to get V4...unless you spotted something for her that you simply MUST HAVE :-)

that compatibility matrix confused me :cheese:

Basically, Genesis is a figure (of the "5" generation) that could be used for male, female etc. Pretty much anything that was "Genesis" is compatible with Genesis. Genesis clothing fitted both male and female characters for Genesis (V5 and M5), and you really just needed morph packages to work with characters (ie female morphs and male morphs to make characters)

Genesis 2 was the next figure - a separate male and separate female (plus every bloody figure had their own UV maps, so you'd need that figure to use a character texture set) Genesis 2 is not really compatible with Genesis, it's a newer figure.

Autofit works pretty well to get Genesis clothing onto Genesis 2....and there are products in the store to get your Genesis characters onto Genesis 2. But not really out of the box, so to speak.

Where it says genesis or genesis 2 under the name is the base figure. For example Michael 6 is a character for Genesis 2 , Michael 5 is Genesis. The figures basically went from 1 to 4 using a unimesh base (generation 1 to 4) which is where Victoria 4 comes from, then when genesis came along it unified both male and female characters into a single mesh the genesis figure(generation 5) most recently genesis 2 split the genders again and are really the 6 th generation of figure bases. Which is why genesis 2 character are usually named with a 6 at the end. Victoria 6, Aiko 6 etc. sheesh i can see why it has become confusing :)

Okey dokey. I think I got it now. So if I get Mike6 then pretty much he is compatible with Genesis 2 stuff and (after using AutoFit) some Genesis stuff but older then that he is out of luck.

    Thanks a bunch guys! :D

Actually, most of earlier generations auto fit pretty well the genesis 2 models (a little less well with genesis 1) with shoes being the complicated one. After a while, you start to notice that the images in the promotions often use earlier generation clothes so you can see how effectively they fit.

Moved to the Commons, as this forum is for DAZ Vendors posting their commercial products.

you know, I noticed that shoes are often quite difficult. Even going from Genesis to Genesis2 you sometimes end up with toes sticking out and stuff. Especially if they are lengthy boots.
