But the point is: will computers with Win8 upgraded to Win8.1 be eligible?
I mean, it's nice my smartphone has the Web, a camera and some quite neat games from Google Play, but the main point is SMS/MMS handling and calls. At least for me... I admit I'd prefer my old phone, but if I hadn't agreed to take a smartphone, my operator would charge me ridiculous sums. It's quite insane, admitted. So I don't care for Windows on smartphones or, even worse, tablets - I need the keyboard.
If Microsoft made their OS "lean, elegant, and efficient" for knowledgeable computer people they would be selling the farm. And besides, it's the fancy interface that provides the "ooh, shiney!" factor for the millions of computer illiterates who want to photo gossip with their friends, that drives the modern computer business. Why sell a few thousand devices to people who know what they're doing when you can sell billions to every yokel on earth. Real computer people want documentation and solid design. Yokels want colors to match their shoes or bragging rights for this month's product.
On a related note: the full version of Visual Studio is currently free too!
I think I found it. It's called "Community 2013". I didn't see any other free versions, unless I overlooked them. The version I found wants 15GB of drive space :O
I've never used Visual Studio before, this maybe fun after all :)

...yeah, "oooohh shiny" seems to always take precedent over practicality.
10 still uses that gwdawful tiled UI and in a story I read this morning they are still promoting the "full screen experience". No thanks.
Guess I gotta hope that the "ObamaCollege" thingie gets approved, then I can go to a tech school where I can actually learn how to deal with linux.

As I understand it the full-screen interface with tiles will be the default for phones and tablets and the Start menu, with tiles on the right and regular applications and links on the left, will be the default for non-touch devices (desktops and laptops).
...but will it have a "Win7-ish" desktop for "real" computers that includes a non-hidden task and status bar?
...and would I be able to turn off those annoying tiles completely? I find the garish contrast and colours used to be somewhat nauseating.
Yes, it will have a task bar (well, Win 8 did too) and a Start menu button. Presumably the tiles will be customisable, as they were in 8, though whether you will be able to replace them with non-tile elements I doubt.
Now the real question is how much of a resource hog is this new OS from MS is gonna be? If you need a min of 8gig of ram and 4 cores just to run Cortana cloud and triple that to use the new Hololens. What is the point of it being new and shiny. I won't use it. If Daz Software upgrades to use new Hololens then I will shell out some green backs for the new OS so I can do virtual 3D. On a side note I wonder if they are going to blow the dust off of TrueSpace and make it compatible with their new Hololens technology now that would be worth using.

...however in Win 8 task and toolbars were always hidden. Don't care for that."feature".
I just want to know if they're going to restore the Win7 "search from the Run field" feature.
That's the one.
If they build a resource hog MS will only alienate a good portion of tablet users with Aton CPU's, and MS wants to go down a path that Apple is not going with (3D). IMHO development for these new technologies concurrent on Windows 8 and Windows 10 does not seem like their plan.
Either way it will remain free for for the life of your device as long as you already have Win7, Win 8, Win 8.1 and whatever else MS decides to release between now and then.
If not; you can stick with what you have.
I've got Win8(.1) and I never had such problems. They aren't hidden unless you hide them yourself... Or maybe you've got a tablet? Because I don't, I've got Win8.1 on a laptop.

...as I understand it's part of the "full screen experience". I don't have 8 or 8.1, I'd never put that on my workstation.as 7 works just fine for me.
I just have to go on what I see from others I know who have it as well as my experience of dealing with unwanted MS features that you have to hunt for to find where to turn them off.
...yeah, no "free for the life of the device" offer for myself as I am in the process of developing my next generation workstation since the tech curve pretty much is leaving my current one in the dust even if I max out everything on it. The CPU, MB, and GPU are all legacy hardware now, with memory heading that way. Reminds me of the old 386 which I called "the middle child".
The new rig is being designed with server components starting with one 8 core Xeon, 64GB DDR4 (expandable to two 8 core Xeons and 256 GB memory), and an 8GB GPU. By the time I secure the funding to start building, the free offer will most likely be over.
To anyone who is using (beta) 10 or even Windows 8 I'd like to know what the current state of the info panel in Explorer is vis a vis image files. One of my complaints about Win 7 is that all images are treated as photos thus not giving me all the information I want yet offering unnecessary and/or unknown info instead such as 'date taken' and 'rating'.
While doing some grabs as examples I discovered that MS has made some changes in the three years since I started with Win 7. But there is still no way of choosing to turn off the treatment of images as photos nor more importantly having both date created and date modified. Now you can actually edit certain fields that you couldn't before (such as Title, Author, Tag). Also you DO now get both dimensions and filesize. Not getting filesize was one of my main complaints (besides date issues). So Microsoft has fixed that much, anyway.
Attaching some examples of what you currently get in the latest Win 7 for some extensions....
Some curious thoughts. "Full Screen Experience"??? What about my other monitors!
What about having multiple windows open at the same time, the size and where I want them? lol.
Bottom line. If it can't do this

Forget it!
That's one of the 2 interfaces in windows 8.
The 'Full screen experience' is officially called the "Modern UI".
The old desktop is still there but what really annoyed was being forced to boot into the Modern UI and having extra clicks to switch back to the slightly emasculated desktop.
That's mostly fixed in 8.1 but it was too late to stop a lot of people being pissed off about it.
What, no more boot straight to the desktop, :coolmad: That's it, time to find a new OS.
Seeing 8 demonstrated with only with a single screen (when it first came out), and the lack of a start menu, did it in for me. I've just shelled out the funds for Win7, it's simply to late for them. The time to show me a real start menu, boot to desktop, and Multi-monitor support was years ago.
As for the rest, it's in my signature.
A computer is a tool that is supposed to make our lives easier, not make our lives wait for the computer.
.. to add, "...or tell us how we should do things"
If this is all true then we shouldn't be surprised that the thousands who know what they're doing are of less concern to the giant corporation than the billions of yokels. The handwriting was on the wall.
A computer will boot to the desktop in 10, a tablet to the full screen tiled interface (though I think that can be changed if desired).
