Yeah. The math on this deal does not make much sense when you consider the bundles you are going to want, or the chances that there's a character you're not interested in.

Sorry, that is not correct. You get the 5 base characters plus their add-ons for free. That is not stated in the promotion contents, but the front page in the store

But you noticed that his is only inside the banner and not part of the content description of the sales page, or?

The characters and HDs are listed as included at the top of the page, the block is saying yiou get them - permanently - a day early.

Thanks Richard. As someone closer to Daz, can we quote that as an "official answer"?

Yes. You get five Name 8.1 characters and their HDs, you get them (well, at least the abse - I think the HD too) a day early, and you get the other things listed.

It's an interesting offer but somewhat of blind buy.   I'd rather pay for new features in DS that improve content creation than buying more figures.

  • It would be helpful to know if the two free items are new items.

You get to complain about it in the forums one day earlier with your cool forum badge.

Or you could choose the kindergarten approach... You know the one, when you have something the others don't...

I meant sharing of course... wink

But will they be exclusive free, or there will be a chance of a "free with purchase" like for example PC+ weekly

Companies often share their plans and goals, to let customers know what kind of things they're working on, or considering working on.  Daz hasn't been overly forthcoming in that department.  One alternative is to rely on vested users to keep buying stuff, but a lot of new users aren't in that position, and not yet having made a substantial financial investment in Daz assets, they have a lot of other options, depending on their interests.

We have seen Daz striving to open up their library to other platforms with bridges, and with the recent Unreal grant, that type of thing will probably continue.  That focus may [SPECULATION!!!!] shape the direction they will take in designing future generations of Daz figures, but doesn't tell us much about their plans with Daz Studio.

So Daz, please clue your users into your thinking about the future of Daz Studio, or if it even has one.

We have actually shared a great deal about our current development.  As every Mac user knows, we are currently working on a major update to Studio to work with Mac Big Sur (it's stickied at the top o of the forums).  Secondly, we publish updates at least monthly on the bridges.  There is an entire forum and beta period dedicated to soliciting feedback to those updates.  Third, we have a beta for studio where you can see and get our near constant updates and see release notes.

Major updates in the previous 4 months:

We have also done major updates on the store, highly focused on stability (in both purchasing and checkout) and did a major update to the gallery.  As many customers will remember, there would be days of either inability to checkout for lack of loading and unable to download in Studio, due to site issues, that's been solved.  We make updates daily to the website, including search updates, gallery, etc.

We hope that you all continue to give us feedback and help our products improve, whether on forums, surveys, customer service outreach, calls, etc.

For one thing, I’m happy that we can actually see a Daz employee is paying attention to the forums. For a long time we were told Daz never reads the forums which made no sense to me. I really hope you or other Daz employees continue to monitor the forums to get the feel for what your customers want and don’t want in addition  to monitoring what’s successful sales-wise. I think it’s important for us to at least feel heard, even if Daz decides to make unpopular decisions. So glad that complaints are not being removed like they often were in the past and Daz is at least giving the impression that we are being listened to,

  • Dear Daz,

Making compelling assets that people want to buy has worked well for you. Why not double down on that, instead of gimmicks? Forum Flair? Are you serious?

I don't need to know the future of Daz Studio. I prefer to ride this thing wherever the wind blows. Other programs provide for my other interests.

However, a full, in-depth guide to Filament would have been great for a blockhead like me, who can't muddle through the confusing forum discussions without getting a headache. I will NEVER condemn the Daz 3d folks for not telling me what's coming in the future! I need help with the present!
Let me repeat, I do condemn them for not providing that Filament help...

Sorry, I distracted myself. I don't plan my life, never mind my hobbies, on the future anymore. It's a waste of time because few things turn out like we think they're going to be, anyway.

The past umpteen months of hard-core sales is all I've needed to remain happy. I mean, 70%, 80%, more, off of items that bring to mind so many possible render ideas, has really inspired me... too bad I don't have a machine with a GPU yet... but that's another story... I keep distracting myself.

  • As you can see, I passed.   I will wait to see how this one works out first and maybe consider the next one.

The past has taught us that Daz is not going to document their new features. They might sell you a tutorial that explains it for you though.

I don't understand the hoopla about getting a product one day early.  Like is that really important enough to even be mentioned?  Seems like somebody's tugging on a leash to coax a dumb & stubborn animal.

Given all the people who comment "first" on youtube and the like it really does seem to matter. Can't say I entirely understand it myself, but thats true of a lot of things

For those who think any company should provide a long term roadmap for their business, consider the following:

If YOU owned a business where you produced new products and technologies regularly for sale, would you:

    1. Tell your competitors (or potential competitors) what cool new products and technologies you're working on and will be introducing in, say, 3-5 years?

    2. Tell potential investors about those planned products, and then accept their investment money based on that roadmap, but then something unexpected happens and you can't meet those goals? "WHAT?? Why do you think we gave you all that money???" Not good.

    3. Tell your customers about those planned products, but then something unexpected happens and you can't meet those goals, and your customers get disappointed? "WHAT??? We've been waiting 3 years for that!!!". Not good.

I think it's safe to say that most for-profit companies (unlike Blender) keep their long term future plans very, very secret, and only discuss with those who have signed a lot of proprietary agreements. And some publicly-held companies are under government regulations that restrict what they can say.

  • Yup, just remember what happened to Osborne Computers back in the 80s.  They told the public about this phenominal new machine they were developing that was coming up soon, and was way better than their current machine... and sales of the current machine dropped like a stone as everyone was waiting on this shiney new machine... which cut the legs out from under the budget for developing that shiney new machine and....  Osborne Computers went belly up.

    Uhhh... no?

    Electronic Entertainment Expo?

    Tokyo Game Show?

    Comic Con?

This isn't developing the next ICBM here. It's entertainment software. And entertainment companies frequently advertise their upcoming products months or even years in advance, precisely because it gets people excited about the new product:

While there've been cases of companies making big promises and dropping the ball lately (Anthem), their problem was bad management and a lack of communication with the audience. Both of those issues would be solved with a roadmap and regular updates on its progress.

Daz is a privately-held company, so that last point is irrelevant.  Rules for private companies are very different from those for public companies.  Their VC investors are most likely already well informed about Daz's plans, since business plans are what private companies use to obtain private capital, debt financing, etc.  If Daz isn't planning to innovate for another "3-5 years", they might as well pack it in now, because the market won't wait that long, not with Unreal sending out emails about MetaHuman today, as it happens.  A lot of Daz's current, and certainly future customers would be even more disappointed in a year if all Daz had done is fiddle a bit with G8's UV, slapped together a new, underwhelming shader and tossed in the G3/8 expression rig some of us paid to purchase, while goofing around with crypto and really expensive "free" characters.
