Creating Impacts/Craters/Footprints In the Ground

Okay. I was playing around with Ghost Dynamics, which I found to be an excellent product for deform meshes with a respectable poly count. But that got me to thinking; what if I wanted to put a hole in a mesh with a low poly count? Something like a road or a wall? Things that typically have a low poly count? Anybody have any ideas?

    Subdivide?

Unfortunately the extra geometry created by SubD isn't modified by most deformers.

I recall there was some product for 3Delight to make footprints in surfaces like sand or snow. I'm not sure how it worked, whether it was just some clever mostly transparent texture on a plane, or something more elaborate with displacement maps.
I'm almost certain the creator disappeared from the Daz store with said product though, and also that neither can be found anywhere anymore. No idea if anyone more knowledgable than me in these things ever attempted to make something like that for iray. For something like not too deep footsteps, a normals or bump map might suffice (is it possible to add those through projection as a decal or something?), but for craters, it'd need to involve displacement maps, which means subdivisions, which means increasing rendertimes.

Alessandro is developing a product call Materia that does it

That sounds like Nerd3D's Footsteps Tool, which is still for sale at Hivewire for Poser and DS 3.1 +

It has presets for footsteps as well as tire/sled/ski tracks.
