Marvelous Designer - Survey

I've made a similar thread a while back trying to get a feeling on how many people here use Marvelous Designer. Link: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/441427/inquiry-how-many-of-you-use-marvelous-designer/p1

There's been an update to their licencing and pricing: https://www.marvelousdesigner.com/company/news/view/54

Long story short: cheapest option will be ~24$/month.

With the advent of new tech it's now fully feasable to replace weight maps on clothes with top tier cloth simulation. Depending on the machine, the cloth simulation can even be in realtime. There's a way to model full character clothing (including hard elements like armor) that will allow you to import them into MD and realistically drape it on any posed Genesis figure. This draped asset can easily be reimported back into Daz Studio. Essentially, creating clothes in this fashion will make them compatible with any old, new, and upcoming Genesis figures. With some work, PA's will even be able to make their outdated assets compatible with any new or upcoming figure.

If you're not a content creator and just want to work with the assets from the Daz Store, will you be willing to pay extra for an MD licence to use this option of realistic clothing simulation on certain Daz Store assets?

I purchased it, and I have the option to upgrade the download version each time it's released until it goes sub only.

I'll be purchasing again, but I wont be subscribing.

I'm a hobbiest and render in Blender, and whilst Blender is getting better with cloth, I like some of the stuff I can do with MD that I find more complicated in Blender.

i already have an MD sub.

I own way more MD clothing that i purchased from artstation etc than i do daz clothing.

your proposition of making rigid objects simulatable in MD is very interesting to me.

...so unless I hit at least five of six numbers in say tomorrow night's Megabucks lotto, I'm pretty much out of luck with getting a perpetual licence. Sad, such a great programme (I have a very old version no longer eligible for an upgrade discount), but 300$ each year as opposed to a one time ever outlay of 490$ is far too steep on my budget (and I dislike having to be online when I am working).

So I guess the answer would "no", not so much for the question about cloth simulation, but generally speaking as I've pretty much stopped purchasing clothing here since it is all gone G8 and dForce while  I still primarily use G3 along with older Genesis generations (and A3).

Maybe. I could never afford a perpetual license and for me learning new programs is usually a long back and forth process, where I cycle through stuff dropping it and picking it back up again. Subscription models as the sole option for software is very bad, but also if I have a ~1 month trial to determine whether I think I'll ever learn enough to justify paying hundreds of dollars or more for something I kind of had fun messing around with, the answer is always going to be no. As long as I can pay month to month, the $39 is doable once in a while (prepaying isn't wise because I know I'll use it maybe 3 months out of the year).

But if it ever clicks with me and I find I can use it to make my own stuff and get more out of my existing assets, it'd probably end up saving me money.

  • I only have daz as a hobby. Limited time and financial demands force me to make choices. After learning DAZ for more than 2 years, I decided to get some modeling and texture software. During this week Black Friday, I'll probably buy Zbrush (or 3DCoat) and definitely Substance. This is learning for me for about next 3 years :) I have access to Sketchup. MD could be great, but I don't have the time or the money for the other software, especially so specialized. I had the opportunity to try it, for me definitely better than Blender / the connection between me and Blender will never work /. I will need to modify some dresses rather than create a brand new one and ZBrush or 3DCoat could handle that too.

I also have an old license before they went subscription only. I almost use MD exclusively for my renders if they feature clothings to be draped, so everything except bodysuits and armor. For stuff where I can find templates like Artstation assets I start from there and create my own stuff, otherwise I start from scratch.

DAZ clothing is rarely welded, so if the clothing piece features separate parts they don't work in MD. If they are single piece I will export them to MD where I can control mesh density a lot better.

I never use dforce, because I can never get results with dforce that come close to what I get with MD.

I have to admit since I started branching out buying software instead of DAZ assets my spendings have not increased dramatically ... before I spent on stuff in the DAZ store and now I buy software to create what I want, and use what i already have ... it surprised me myself. I have bought a 200$ gift card in January and it has still 20$ on it.

I have just bought a perpetual license in October to version 9.5x. I am eligible to upgrade to the newest perpetual version up to MD 12.X which is what I will do about a month before MD 13.x. After that I will use MD 12.x and should MD 13.x have some sort of modeling feature, simulation feature, or come with a large cache of great 'Simplicity' type patterns I can make use of I would do most of the work in MD 12.x and then sub for the newest MD for a couple of months to finish the work. I will back up any MD 12.5 work or patterns though before opening them in a later  subbed MD 13.x+ version to avoid the goctha of upgrading my project work such that I'd be forced to subscribe to MD 13.x to finish or do future work.
