People's Choice - Dazzie Awards ?

Soooo.....

I was thinking.
Wouldnt it be neat/cool to have our own Dazzie Awards?  Ok, quit chuckling and hear me out.

So, we have a time where we take nominations for "years best" in several different categories, Character Male/Female, Clothing, Props, Monster/Animal, Tool/Utility, Historical, Sci-Fi, etc.. maybe 10 Categories or so.
Maybe we (the users) vote on the top 3 for each category... and then have a panel of... lets say 3 Heavy Users here (that are not PAs) decide on the years best.

Finalist get extra promotion in the form of a Dazzie Finalst Tab on the store's home page, Winner of each category would get an emblem to put on their product page (Dazzie 2020 Award Winner) AND have a Dazzie Award Winners tab on the Shop Homepage that ran until replaced by next year's winner.

Maybe start in Nov/December with the winners announced in Jan....

Obviously we'd need to pitch/Sell it to the Daz Folks... even better if they could "supply" all the Panelist with the assets to judge.

just and idea that I'd think would be fun... it if works out it could be an annual thing... if the idea sucks, don't kill me.

The idea definitely does NOT suck. Kudos for a fun idea. BUT...while the idea sounds like fun, the judging doesn't. Who is a heavy hitter? The people who own the most products, or the people who post the most often in the forums with renders, or the people who post the most often in the galleries, or..... or....

If this comes to fruition, it should be decided by a vote through something like Survey Monkey, where the votes are transparent. Meaning the results show on a table, not the voters' individual votes. Those of us who run contests often use Survey Monkey. And before you ever get in to this, know this would be a "huge give 100% of your time to doing it" proposition. I've run contests off and on for many years, and setting this up then keeping up with all the posts is a considerable task.

I know I wouldn't participate if there were judges for this type of thing. Who are they to decide what the rest of us think are best?

  • Yea I think for it to be a true 'community' thing it really needs to be for the community, by the community.

    Hey Novica...
    Thanks for commenting!
Originally, I thought it could all be voted on by the masses, but the problem there is, if you don't have every asset, how could you judge all of them? So maybe the masses vote to get it down to 3 per Category, then a selected group of folks that Know Daz and Know Products well enough could be the final judges.  And if the group was small - maybe Daz wouldn't mind giving them the assets to use/judge.

Thing is, it would be pretty hard to verify purchases.  There could be massive voter fraud!

  • I really like the idea- but only if every user gets a vote. It could be a great thank you to the PA s as well as show off their work in something other than a promo.

It sounds like a great idea ... it could also act as a way to let the PA's know what the consumers are looking for.

As someone who used to judge photography contests, ... you absolutely need to be clear on what constitutes a winner and how the judges will be judging. If it is by votes by the viewers you almost do not need judges. If they look at composition, artistic merit, techincal merit, etc, etc, etc ... then that needs to be known.  Since we are looking at products, we might include items like ease-of-use-out-of-the-box, or friendliness to lower end computer systems [ does that pencil really need a 4K map? ], or flexibility for people who use shaders or do kitbashing [ I love when items show the shader zones in the promo ].

Oh, and yes, at least three judges ... any less can skew results dramatically.

Oh ... and you need to define the catgegories clearly. For example, if you have a NATURE category - is it strictly nature only or is the hand-of-man allowed to be included (for example telephone poles in the background or a lighthouse on a primarily beach scene, etc).

EDIT:  other categories could include best:  camera, atmospheric effect, animation / sequential poses, ... and possibly allow each judge a judge's choice award for those quirky items that do not fit any category.

Unfortunately I couldn't vote as I don't own enough products & those I do own I have not used thoroughly enough to evaluate. I can say I am happy with 99.9% percent of the product I have used that I have bought at the price point I bought it at. I'd say, as a very rough guess, I've used about 10% of the product I've bought. I tend to use the same products repeatedly and the scope of my purchases were made because of hypothetical uses in the future. I valued and value the convenience of having it paid for locally over the need to find it and buy it should I need or want it in the future. Also, having it locally and browsing through the content library can sometimes give me ideals. Ideals are hard to come by so that's a plus.

I think it sounds like a fun idea!

I think the places should be determined by community vote, and I think it's ok to vote for a product one doesn't own, just judging by promos and possibly gallery entries one has come across. Let's just keep it simple, light, and fun!

I also think there should be the option to leave cathegories blank. Let's say there's going to be a cathegory called "Best Shader Set". I rarely ever buy or even pay much attention to shader sets and my vote would be pretty much random. I'd leave that cathegory blank and only vote for cathegories I care about.

I don't know about judging based on promo pictures. There are situations like this in which, depending on who you ask, the promo picture may or may not match the actual product.

Or maybe it doesn't matter so much since this is meant to be fun.

I'd rather have a Razzie-Dazzie, but the new store software would probably take it in a landslide.

And the runner-up would be the old store.

That last line is exactly my point. Yes, I have occasinally been disappointed by products that looked a lot better in promos (not very often, fortunately). But if there is no monetary prize maybe we don't need to make it too complicated.

I never said anything about having to own the resources or "verifying purchases" to vote or what not...

But it you have it or used it you have a better understanding of it.  Ideally, the Judges should get a copy of the assets to evaluate/use. It may be a stretch, but for the Academy Awards, they send out copies of the movies to the voters to watch.  I was putting forth/hoping that if we had 3 judges, that the PAs or DAZ could send them the products "gratis" or on loan.. to be used and judged.

So the common folks nominate and vote for 3 best per category, the Judges determine the winner.  Maybe "Best Promo Page" could be something everyone votes on as it doesn't require assets.... just eyes.

Its all for fun anyway, but I did think it would be great for PAs... especially the winners if they were showcased in their own store tab.  Neat little "Dazzie Winner" icon for the top corner of the page and a blurb "Won Best Scenery Asset for 2020 People's Choice Dazzie Award".  The extra Expo$ure would be welcomed, me thinks.
