Need some Mac GPU expertise

Running a Mac 5.1 (Mid 2010) with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 2 GB  graphics Card.

OS is Mojave 10.14.6 with 16GB DDR3 memory.

I recently upgraded to this OS because the GPU wouldn’t work under High Sierra. I have down loaded the latest CUDA and driver from NVIDIA even though they are listed for  OS 10.13. Which I might add refused to work for that OS. Try as I may I can’t get Studio to see this GPU. What Am I missing? I'm perfectly willing to buy a different card but can't help but wonder if that would be a useless expense.

  • Spitballing a touch from my last experience with a Mac: It may require you to monkey around a bit with the NVIDIA driver versions... I remember when I had my MBP (2012?), it took just the right driver version to make it behave so that DS would see it. Wish I could recall exactly what, but the MBP had a uber-crappy nVidia GPU version onboard.

  • Upgrading MacOS is the wrong direction. You need older versions for Nvidia drivers to work.

The reason I upgraded was precisely because the older version would not work.

  • Go further back.

  • What version of DS? It is a combo of X and Y that make me stuck where I am.

I'm sorry, but you've got yourself into a no win situation. What version of Daz are you running? That can effect Iray requirements. For Mac, you need all the stars to perfectly align to get a GPU working on Mac and Daz Iray. You need the specific OS, driver, and version of DS to all be exact. You have to use an older version of Daz that supports the outdated Nvidia Mac drivers.

You also have a bigger problem. That 680 isn't going to do much. I had a 670 2gb when I started Daz and it was super limiting. And that was back then, most of today's content uses a lot more VRAM. It is totally possible to use more than 2gb VRAM with a single G8 character and hair today.

Another issue is that some versions of Daz Iray have problems with Kepler based GPUs, like the 680. I remember seeing this in some patch notes, and this issue has been going on for a while without a resolution as Iray is expected to drop Kepler support soon anyway. So you might have everything right, but still have issues because of Kepler.

So honestly I don't know how worthwhile this would be. This is a really tough situation.

Thanks for all your help folks. I guess I'm stuck with CPU rendering.

You're not, actually.   You can use Jack Tomalin's Iray server for a monthly fee, and there's nimbix that lets you pay as you go.
