Looking for a manual for ColorWerks Hair Kit

Fae3DFae3D Posts: 2,926

I bought ColorWerks Extreme: Hair Texture Blending for Iray and dForce Hair a while back, and I'm just now starting to really play with it.  I figured out how to get two different colors on one hair, but I can't make it fade from one color to the other, it just puts streaks or highlights of the second color in.  I thought that there was a manual for this product, but I have searched my computer and can't find one.

Does anyone know about a manual for this?  Or if not, could someone who's used this walk me through the steps real quick?  I'm using MRL dForce Long Morphing Hair for Genesis 8 Female(s), if that matters.

Unfortunately not, but thank you very much for looking!  I'm still getting stripes instead of a fade.

Try the mask offset. 50% will "center" the fade about half-way down (up?)

Although this is advertised as being for dForce hair, it was designed primarily for trans-mapped hair and the masking functionality will only work with trans-mapped hair products.

What exactly are you trying to do; I found it a pain to deal with without tweaking shedloads of settings.

I upped gravity to 2, then put the settings to something like the image shown.

Incidentally, this was positioned above the Genesis (1) character; I could have parented it to the head, but for this there is no need. Dforcing gets it on top of the head and then the hair drapes. I only used Genesis to show it is easy for a simple pose to use any generation of character.

You can also try setting the gravity to about 10 and not adjusting any settings, that works on some hairs well, but there can be issues with it intersecting other items. Depends what you're after

I use Blender now for my renders so it's been months since I used this har, so I may not be remembering something I figured out.

Settings with Constraint are worth looking at if something is not doing what you want; PAs often provide options to change settings, so it's always worth seeing what settings those change and if you like it increase the amount.

I don't tend to mess with Stetch Stiffness - hair has very little of it.

Dynamic stenght is also worth checking - it can be set to less than one. Bangs base and Outer on the MRL hair are less than one, but I mostly left as is, unless I wanted them to move.

Settings shown in white indicate they've been changed from default; don't presume that because they are at default I haven't changed them. Don't think I set any to default though.

So for Sloshwerks blending the MRL_DFLM hair!

These are shaders, so you'll need to be in the Surfaces tab, and preferably in the Content Library.  I tried this in Smart Content, and it wasn't as straightforward.

For this hair, you select the base, and then in the Surfaces tab, select the parts you want to colour.

Then you select your base colour from the Blend 1 choices, your blend colour from the Blend 2 Choices and the mask from the Utilities folder.  Those get slotted into the Surfaces tab as shown, and this is the result.   And they do work with this hair.

Thanks everyone!  I still can't get it to do what I want, but I think it's just this particular hair.  I can get two colors on it, but they look like vertical stripes, not a horizontal fade from all blue to all pink.  So I think I just have one of the hairs that won't work exactly right with it.  I appreciate all the help, though!

I can't get the ColorWerks products to work for me either.  I put a base colour on the hair, then a mask, then a top colour, and VOILA!  Just like magic - nothing happens.  All I get is the base colour.

For that, you might be better off with one of the MMX products?  ColorWerks is fine for streaks but MMX, while having a mind-boggling number of options, which really are badly explained, or rather are not explained, and some colouring options that suggest colour blindness - see attachments, and note the colour names and the colours that go with them - I think it's okay for this type of blending?  In the end I found myself dealing with the color chooser and inputting colours manually, and still couldn't get a result like I think you're looking for.  For example, I didn't select what appears to be a very dark base colour, but there it is.

I specifically got ColorWerks because it looked like the easiest to figure out.  Are there any other hair color products that can do mixes that ARE easy?  I'm wondering if I chose maybe the wrong one for me, but I also wonder if maybe any product like this would be difficult.  Maybe it's just the nature of it.

I don't have this particular hair. If you open one of the textures included with the hair, does the image look like if you laid hair down straight in a square vertically? I know you can't share an image from the product, but if you check that and the texture doesn't go straight up and down, it may require changes or may not work well with this version of the product.

Unfortunately I don't have Extreme yet, but I have a previous version of ColorWerks. From what you are showing, it seems like it might require a different preset to start with. But if you look at how the original hair texture images are laid out, it might be a start to figuring out if it's not going to work with this hair at all, or if it needs to be modified.

Another thing to check, if you have an image that's just black in the top half and white on the bottom (Colorwerks may have an image like that as a mask, helpfully), just try putting that into the hair diffuse color normally before applying any different shaders. That should at least let you see if you get a clean half and half appearance. Otherwise, since it sounds like it started as fiber mesh in another program, the UV might not be set up in a way to easily get what you are looking for.

Tried it on a couple of dForce SBH and get the same results as you; alternating vertical bands of the two blend colours, not a fade from one to the other going down the hair. Same for a fibremesh hair. I guess the UV mapping would be the deciding factor. The fade works well with the typical vertical orientation of transmapped hair, but not with the SBH and Fibremesh that I tried.

Thanks for trying, everybody.  I ended up just giving up and leaving her hair plain blue.  Maybe I'll try this again another day.

Yeah, Colorwerks is pretty easy to use.  But it's not for ombrés.  However, SBH itself helps with ombrés!  You can pick one colour for the "roots" and another for the "tips".  In practice the roots are just the hair closer to the scalp and the tip is the closer to the tips. You can use the CWX colours, but don't use the "Colorwerks Shader Apply First" option.  That sets up the shader options for CWX blends and hides all the other stuff.   For an ombré, these other options are what we want.

To get this result, I started with the blue colour that comes with the hair.  You can pick a blue from CWX instead.  That should be in all the "root" options.   Then in all the "tip" options, go pick a pink colour from the CWX options in Runtime/Textures/Sloshwerks/ColorwerkX/CWXBlends folder.

In order to get a strong contrast, you need to adjust the "Root to Tip Gain" slider and move it to the left.   This is at 0.2, but depending on your patience, you can experiment here.   You can also play with the "Root to Tip Bias" slider if you want to give either the blue more room or the pink.

If you don't want to recolour the bangs, then just leave those options untouched.

Thank you, that looks like it probably would have worked!  I gave up with that piece, but I'll bookmark this in case I want to put crazy colors on that hair again, or any SBH!  I really appreciate it!!!
