Tutorial: Eliminating file bloat and morph slider performance issues

July 2020 edited July 2020 in Cinema 4D Discussion

I figured I would give this little tut I made its own home so it can help more people once it is inevitably buried int he discussion thread.

In this tutorial, I explain how to eliminate the massive file bloat that C4D's fbx importer creates.  When C4D imports a DAZ fbx, it imports every single facial morph as a target MESH instead of a collection of point deltas (a "standard" pose morph).  This bloat in turn drives pose morph slider performance into the ground, not to mention gives you a ridiculously and unnecessarily large file.

The test file I used while making this tutorial, which had a figure, hair, and numerous articles of clothing and armor went from 3.06gb to just 25mb (!!!!!)  That's a 99.2% reduction!  With pose sliders now based on deltas instead of morph targets, the morph slider performance is also now 100% fluid.

Hope this proves useful to everyone.  I would recommend saving a backup copy of anything you try it on until you get the hang of it and are sure you are happy with the results.  You want to be precise since you're deleting things, after all.

This will most likely have to get updated once the bridge imports more than just face morphs.

Thanks for your tutorial. I've been doing this since trying out the new bridge. I never bothered to think about linking the eyes with the lashes so this is a big improvement over what I've been doing. Thanks again.

Ah, I didn't see this before I added a written description of the same process on the feedback post! ;) - definitely a better, more efficient way to handle morph targets ;)

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I noticed a peculiarity, though: my figure has mesh eyebrows (actually just one), and copying the morphs for the eyebrows takes significantly longer than for the figure or the eyelashes.

Also, I'm guessing I have a LOT more morphs and expressions than you, and chose to keep more of them, because my file went down from 8.5GB to 149MB.
