Windows 2004?

Anyone installed it? I'm always suspicious of new windows builds.

Maybe change the subject line to Windows 10 build 2004?

I have been using windows since version 3.0 and I would always recommend deferring updates for atleast 30 days. Updates tend to be live trials of the update by Microsoft. So if you like beta testing updates for Microsoft then do the update now. I prefer to defer to others to do the beta testing.

My windows 10 update is configured as follows:

Go to Settings -> Windows Update -> Adavnced options

    1. Recieve updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows is ON

    2. Download updates over metered connections OFF

    3. Update notifications ON

    4. Pause updates (I am not using this at the moment)

    5. Choose when updates are installed:

    5a. feature update 45 days

    5b. quality update 30 days

    I hope this helps.  :-)

According to this thread  https://www.codeproject.com/News.aspx?ntag=19837497734487550&_z=6245748  it seems to mess with a number of settings and stuff, e.g. :

"My son has a Ryzen 9 running at 3.5GHz[^] but yesterday he said he noticed it was running at somewhere around 1GHz.
I said, "You're running Win10, right? (I run Ubuntu) It was probably some update or something."
He checked his BIOS, etc and then noticed that Win10 had removed a driver for his chipset and replaced it with an older one.
He installed the new chipset drivers again and it was running at 3.5GHz again. Win10 Hmmm | :| "

I've been looking forward to that update for months because I was hoping the WSL2 stuff would be a huge improvement. I was really hoping that with WSL 2, I could actually use real sym links on my linux shares, but that doesn't work, and may never work....sigh.

I ended up reverting back to WSL 1 because there were some weird oddities between the linux to windows interaction that I just got tired of trying to figure out (trying to open programs in windows from the linux terminal was flaky).

That is on my personal machine, which I use DAZ Studio with and I haven't had any issues that I consider to be specific to Windows.

I installed it on my work computer as well (which needs WSL even more) and WSL 2 works fine (less necessary interaction with the windows part). Also, if you use Docker, WSL 2 integrates very nicely with docker, so I am no longer at a disadvantage to my Mac / Linux using collegues.

If you want to install this, be sure that your machine it totally up to date before starting it. Also, be sure to create a nice little restore point in case you need to recover.

I'd be cautious, this update may set you back 16 years :p

That still means they've had three years to work on the pod-bay-door bug.

Here the list of known issues : https://docs.microsoft.com/fr-fr/windows/release-information/status-windows-10-2004

Issue with older drivers for Nvidia display adapters (GPU)
You might have issues if you are using an Nvidia display adapter (GPU) and drivers with a version below 358.00.

I used to work for a small DOD subcontractor and one of the owners told a story about a presentation they attended where the MS speaker showed some graphs describing the research they did to determine the sweet spot between when to release software balancing how quickly they could put the product out on the market vs how many bugs people would tolerate before they stopped buying MS products. Obviously, not everyone responded the same, since there are a lot of people that gave up on them (including me for 10 years or so) but the vast majority do fall in line with their findings.

Sounds like any commercial software ever.

  • Well my update notification ( I have it set to pause updates for 7 days) says it's ready to go all I have to do is download and install. When it comes to major software upgrades I am a chicken. However, I have a friend that has installed build 2004 and has not experienced any issues. I'm still holding back.
