I'm not diabetic, but I do practice a ketogenic diet, so I haven't had any sweets in months.

you denied yourself sugar which can cause major problems if your diabetic and it's not so great for you if your not, you also denied yourself coffee from starbucks which not only cost 4x as much as anyone else it also tastes like someone trying to put a cigar out on your heart so good for you!

I denied myself diet soda today and I love that crazy-ass stuff even though it's got all the dietary benefits of Satan's pee.

did you see the latest report that links Satan's pee to a healthier heart and lower cholesterol?

I hate coffee, but rely on starbucks sales since they are in the stores I manage.

    Greetings,
My vice is Diet Coke. I've cut it down to 2-3 cans a day, but I used to drink a 6-pack a day. A long time ago I used to drink more.

As a 'nominally diabetic', I have not denied myself anything today, but probably should have.

Renal Patent - you want a limited diet try the renal diet for 5 years plus. No Chocolate, no Dairy of any kind, no Potatoes, no Beans other than Green cuts, no PIZZA!! The list of you can not haves is over 29 pages long, the list of allowed foods is just 3 and not growing. I know the Deny thing very well, it also does not help that so many TV commercials are for Yummy looking stuff I can only look at.

I went to my doctor recently for a routine annual check-up. After taking my blood pressure he said, "You could probably stand to add a bit more salt to your diet."

Hah. I really don't like salt all that much. I wish he'd said "chocolate". But then dark chocolate is supposed to be good for -lowering- blood pressure. Dammit.

I'm rather frugal when it comes to coffee since I don't drink the stuff to begin with, and when I do it's just plain black coffee. I do not patronize starbuck's because they are what I call "brand name" product, whose name you pay for. And you know what? My wallet thanks me for it.

Don't look at it as "denying" yourself. You only crave more of the stuff if you think of it that way. Rather, think of it as you chose to not have it today, but can have it any other time you want.

Cutting it out lowers cholesterol or drinking it? I was downing 1.5 family sized plastic bottles of Coke Zero a day at the heigh of my mania, I'm drinking Vantage Mandarin Orange seltzer right now, it's keeping the evil spirits at bay for the moment.

I make desserts for myself with erythritol and sucralose sometimes, and those are what I "deny" myself when it's not the weekend or a special occasion. ;) I haven't been able to kick the Satan Pee yet. I just try to keep it to a can a day and have Diet Rite, which has no sodium (now with only carbonated water and the best laboratory-grade chemicals!).

I quit eating sugar and high-fructose corn syrup and anything that contains those in March (also sucrose mixtures like agave and honey, etc). I hate how impossible it is to buy packaged food without sugars in it. They use weasel words instead to try to make it sound healthy ("evaporated cane juice") and put it in stuff you'd never expect to have it (whole wheat bread, even from "healthy" or "organic" brands, most yogurts, and of all things, ketchup).

I've tried a lot of artificial sweeteners at this point. I do not yet have the willpower to be around when everyone's eating cake or ice cream and not have some kind of treat. So far the combo of 50% sucralose/50% erythritol works the best in my homemade baking and frozen yogurt experiments. Stevia and aspartame both have nasty aftertastes to me, and sugar alcohols other than erythritol aren't worth it because one, they have so many calories and two, they cause me digestive issues.

Thank goodness for fresh fruit, says I. Since I quit sucrose, fresh pineapple and mango from Costco taste mind-blowingly delicious.

Ditto on the fresh fruit. My doctor frowns at all the fruit, veggies, and some whole grain starches I eat, but as long as my diabetes is under control, he gives me slack. Fortunately, he recognizes that with my sleep disorders and being stay-at-home-dad for an autistic child, I can't manage a super-low-calorie diet if I want to be awake when needed.

You have my total respect. That is a lot to handle.

I'm not actually diabetic yet, I'm just trying not to turn into a Type II like my Dad, grandparents, and some extended family. I have sleep issues too (I would not be surprised to learn that sleep disorders and diabetes are linked) and I don't know how I'd make it without this job.

My "normal" sleep cycle is like eight, eight, five, ten, start over the fifth night. It's pretty consistent; unless my schedule is disrupted I just allow for waking up at 4:30 a.m. and starting work at 5 about two days a week (vs. 8:30 or 9 most of the others). I did the sleep hygiene thing when I was on depression meds a couple of years ago on my PA's advice.* Doesn't work even a little bit.

Do you remember the classic Star Trek episode about the salt-sucking monster? If you had no salt at all in your diet it would kill you.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

Not diabetic yet - but my blood sugar always checks out on the high (but not quite pre-diabetic) side at my semi-annual fluid checks. I cut back on coffee from roughly one and a half pots per day (with a dash of sugar per cup) to one (14 ounce) cup per day when I retired 5 years ago. I also cut out high-fructose corn syrup in anything.

I do an occasional diet ginger ale or root beer - the only soft drinks that taste the same in diet and sugared form, but for the most part I do seltzer and lemon or lime juice as my beverage of choice.

Wow, that is an accomplishment. I drink around 16 oz. of coffee a day and it would be very hard to give up.

I actually prefer the taste of diet sodas, the cheaper the better, but it's probably because I grew up with it and have nostalgia for it (the Shasta brand especially, I love their diet cream soda and diet chocolate sodas).

Now, ramune, those I really miss. They don't come in diet.

Well - part of the coffee issue at work was the stress - and the fact that the coffee station for the entire floor was just four steps from my desk . . .

I did go through a period of caffeine withdrawal, but it wasn't that bad.

I am on a couple of meds that have dry mouth as a side effect, so I am almost always drinking something; on the typical day, I'll go through more than 3 liters of liquids, mostly plain water (or, I suppose, I should say more than 3 liters of fluids go through me . . . :-) ). I actually prefer seltzer over ice so I tend to beat on my soda-stream, especially in the summer.

Truly amazing the amount of food stuffs we can't eat for that reason. *sigh*

I have a new found respect for tea, though. I used to really dislike tea, but as I try and avoid all the unhealthy beverages out there I've discovered that the reason I didn't like tea was because nobody ever served me the good stuff. I had become convinced it was all just muddy water with little or no taste. Glad to find out I was wrong. :-)

Also glad that I lost my sweet tooth long ago. Now, if I could just get rid of the occasional desire for something crunchy and a bit salty. *wink*

Again, total respect. That must be so hard.

I love tea too. Especially chocolate tea. I used to eat so much chocolate and sometimes I have near-pornographic dreams about it, but at least I can always have Stash Chocolate Hazelnut. I first tried Dogadan chocolate tea a long time ago and loved it; it was too hard to get here in the States (a friend had some they got from an exchange student), but I found the Stash version not long after. There are some more quality chocolate teas that I mostly consider cost-prohibitive, but once in a while I have one of those as a treat too. They have the strong cocoa flavor without the powerful bitterness that I don't care for in plain cocoa or most dark chocolate.

I also love anything spicy with orange notes (the cheapest is Constant Comment, sometimes Bengal Spice). Occasionally I have something less sweet like Earl Gray with lunch.

    What teas do you like?

BIG BIG SMILE... I feel the same way about pure, original, unadulterated, un-topped, New York Style CheeeeeseCake! (one of the things I miss about living on the East Coast), ...and to a lesser extent... a really good Cinnnnnamonnn roll (heavy on the cinnamon), not to mention Chocolate. Things I mostly can't have anymore but still dream about.

Keeping in mind that I am still a tea noob out on tea safari, and in the early stages of the hunt for the elusive 'good stuff', and points of purchase... I will say that one of the first teas that I really enjoyed and which turned my attitude towards tea around was Good Earth's Sweet & Spicy Tea, which does have an 'orange note'. I also just recently tried a enjoyable Honey Vanilla Chamomile tea, which was interesting for the way the honey vanilla taste kicked in a moment after sipping and swallowing. Not bad at all. And I am also finding that I enjoy a good green tea, but I'm still experimenting with them.

You would think with all the promotion Earl Grey tea has received via television shows (Star Trek NG, etc.) I would have tried it, but it is still on my tea to do list. *rolls-eyes*

Chocolate Tea!?! I've never heard of such a thing. I'll have to look into it.

In the spirit of teasing the coffee drinkers out there... I shudder at the thought of the last time I tried a cup of coffee. Not a tastefully pleasant experience. Perhaps I should try it again. It has been a long time. Or perhaps I'm better off not trying it again, what with the caffeine addiction and all. *shudder, wink*

I've always thought they gave Picard the Earl Gray as "his" tea because it's the kind of tea you'd expect a no-nonsense starship captain to drink: more sophisticated than a cup of plain brewed coffee (that show began before Starbucks was big, remember) without going all the way to floral or herbal varieties. It's a black tea with bergamot, and bergamot has sort of a metallic flavor, definitely more of a savory than sweet. He also drinks it black, which would emphasize its stronger qualities.

I always add cream but never sweeteners to my teas. This is a matter of individual preference. I like sweet in literally any other taste (I normally put a sugar free cocoa packet in my coffee, for instance).

Today I'm denying myself frozen chicken nuggets, on thread topic. I am lazy, and did not want to make myself a real lunch. :p I had leftover rice with mixins from the fridge instead.

I have been apparently denying myself vitamin B12 and didn't know it. My health was in serious decline since November. I come from a family of hypochondriacs so my natural reaction when I feel like crap is to assume it's all in my head until I get so sick that I have to admit my imagination just isn't that good. It's like I can literally feel the life force oozing out of me each day. So I finally admitted something was wrong and went to the doctor. Pernicious Anemia. Now I'm taking B12 supplements and if that doesn't work it'll be injections. Still trying to narrow down what's caused it but it's certainly not diet. You can't eat as much lamb vindaloo as I do and not have B12 in your diet.

Here's hoping the Doctor doesn't say I have to deny myself vindaloo.

Yeah it's probably caused by a combination of getting older and the meds I take for motility reflux. I'm on losec because my stomach likes to pump acid up into my lungs and digesting yourself isn't that much fun. One of the side effects can be B12 deficiency.

Oh well, as long as it doesn't affect my MP3 player I'm fine. I'd hate to go through life B-52s deficient.
