Spoiled rotten by poses with partials and mirrors

mavantemavante Posts: 734

I have an idle few minutes here in the wee hours of the a.m., and I was reflecting on how spoiled I've become in favor of pose packages that include partials and mirrors—especially in doing animations.

Pose products by the PAs who provide those extras are the only ones I will look at any more, because the ones that don't have them often are priced every bit as much as the ones that do have them.

That's all.

P.S. While typing this, the forum keeps throwing up (literally or figuratively, take your pick) the attached ALERT! ALERT! DANGER WILL ROBINSON! box on my screen. Has happened eight or ten times. Getting really, really old...

Design Anvil include a "mirror pose" script in some of their products - I have it pinned to the menu.

Those are pretty helpful. Though if you have a pose set that doesn't come with partials you can always manually apply part of the pose to any of the bones you select in the scene tab. Just expand the figure's bone tree thing in the scene tab, select any part of the body you want the pose applied to and then Control + Click on the pose. A pop up will allow you to apply that pose to only the selected bones if you choose "Nodes: Selected".

Yes, I think I have that (Can't even run DS at the moment to check). I also have the Pose Mixer that lets you selectively lock different parts of the body so you can apply any pose and it will affect only the unlocked parts. And of course there's the Daz built-in pins. (Ouch)

I just find the availability of mix-and-match partials to be a much smoother and more elegant work flow when trying to set up animations. Lots less fiddling than any of the other methods. It's a godsend.

Divamakeup, I'm not sure you completely grokked what I meant by "spoiled rotten" in the subject title. smiley

  • I was just coming here to suggest the pose mixer, which makes everything have partials! But I see you already have it, hehehe

I am the opposite.  I really dislike the products that waste my HD space and Smart Content response time with pose partials.  I use my own Pose Blender, the free Lock scripts I gave out as part of the Christmas freebies, and other stuff.  To me, pose partials are a gimmick.  (Though, ironically, I am sure I am somewhat to blame as my Assembly Line makes it easy to make pose partials)

A bunch of other products sold here in the shop are gimmicky, since there's roundabout ways to get similar results in DS without the need to purchase them. It doesn't diminish their usability for others who may not know these "tricks". It's great for them to be available for those who need them. (For the record, I'm still trying to figure out how to mirror/flip poses, both full or partial. It's hit or miss for me.)

But if you want to talk about less than useful poses, then the high-heel options take up space. Most of those don't even work well with the high-heeled footwear in my product library. But then, I usually delete those poses and avoid Smart Content altogether.

Edited to add that I'm not including the heel poses that come with the footwear. You can always apply those after you pose your character, so the shoes would look as good as intended.

  • I make limited use of partial poses-- I use them for the hands and face (expressions are really partial poses under a different name).  In short, poses for small body parts with multiple posable components save a lot of time, but partial poses for the neck, torso, arms, and legs are clutter because they don't really save much time for me.

Special foot poses that are included with footwear are also useful.

I admit I am the opposite. I dislike pose sets which include 'filler' poses such as poses for different g8's, gender alternate poses, or reverse poses. You can do all that yourself, and "pads" out a pose set too much. I'd rather have more poses than filler

Yes, I agree that the high-heeled poses are not worth the HD space either.  This is opposed to the foot pose that comes with the high heels which are indispensable.

I feel the same as some of the other here, namely mirror and partials are a waste of space, as every pose can be easily applied to just part of the body.

I try to keep my hundreds of pose sets well sorted, and the first thing I do when I get a new set is to delete all the partials and mirrors, plus those that are slightly tweaked for a different figure shapes. I am only interested in the full body poses for the base figures.

I find the advertisment of some pose products as having "1000s of possible poses" when there are in fact just 25 or 30 full body poses, somewhat misleading.

    <Blink> At ~35Kb per partial? <Blink Blink>

Wow. You should see how much hard drive space crowd billboards take up! Oh, wait ... surprise wink

Yeah, I guess it really is an "each to his own" issue, but my time is far, far more valuable to me than the cost of hard drive space, especially these days, and given that the vast majority of everything I do in Daz Studio is for animation, the partials and mirrors have been a great timesavef.

I also appreciate the extra time and attention a PA puts into providing those, including the creation of specially colored and sorted thumbnails to make finding things fast. So my hat tip in this thread is for those who have gone the extra mile (or few feet, get it, feet?) to do that value-added service. That isn't to say I don't admire, with awe, every PA who creates these magnificent products for us to be able to manufacture and popuate a universe at will, because I do—including, of course, your creations and tools, high on the list.

I just wanted to praise the ones who have chosen to give us these happy helpers in the field of Daz animation.

If it's 25 poses, each with 4 partials, the combinations do run into the thousands:

The HD space obviously doesn't bother me.  Much more is that it slows down Smart Content.
