I am glad things are improving for you.   I have gtx1080ti's cards I don't hold out much hope.   my comment was a mere observation of when things changed with daz studio and the NVIDIA drivers. and what versions the fall backs started.  I was not suggesting everyone reverts back  to older version of daz.  alot of people don't think to save your last few copy of daz before installing the new one which over rights your files. .You can always  download legacy NVIDIA gpu drivers  anytime to roll back gpu drivers for trouble shooting issues and errors,  Some of us old daz users have learned over the years that daz does not offer back copies of their studios  & being a nerd that I am I back up everything , like i said I've been using daz a long long time. I learned over the years to save what works. and I have hard drives full to prove it.  But seriously though there is no reason not to save back copies of daz studio until you find one you can be happy with.  external hard drives are cheap. if you have been using daz for any given time  you have a lot invested in content whats a few $$$ more for a few storage hard drives.

I'm on a 1080TI as well...hoping I can hold out for the 3x cards but I've come close to rage-buying a 2080TI just to be able to render scenes I would have otherwise been able to render just fine six months ago.

By the times those powerful cards come out it will be time to build a new system..

There is all kinds of tricks to make fast renders HRDI's importing pics in the enviro plane ect.

I won't be needing to rebuild a new system...just swap out the 1080TI for a 3xTI...whatever that name may be. I already have 32GB RAM...maybe add two more 16GB sticks. Nothing wrong with my CPU (RZYEN 7 1800x).

But at the suggestion of someone who responded to a thread I started about this very issue about a week ago, I tried out the current beta, and it does seem friendlier to GTX cards. I was told that Daz is trying to build back in some compatibility for the GTX infrastructure, though if that is actually the case I have no idea.

I am really happy its working better for you.

..I'm running a Maxwell Titan-X on an X-58 MB with 24 GB of DDR3 1333 three channel memory and a Westmere 6 core Xeon.  Yeah loading the scene for rendering takes a little more time because the PCIe slots are 2.0 instead of 3.0, but otherwise, it works fine.

What version of DS are you running?

I am sorry to hear about the problems some folks are having with the lastest version of DS (.117)

I am also really concerned by what I am reading, as I  just managed to get a really good deal on some used Maxwell-based rendering cards, and was about to install Daz studio on a spare motherboard to run them...From what I hear, I must rethink this.  surprise

I'm using the DS Beta version 12.1.115 (haven't made the latest update yet) and have an old 980TI with 6GB. I'm not experiencing many problems rendering 3 characters in a scene as of yet. I have to watch for the scene not to be larger than what my card can handle, of curse. But yes, there has been some loss of "memory" and also "render time" due to Iray being written "new from scratch" that is noticable. I'm fortunate to be able to use Jack's render farm mentioned earlier, but even before they made the changes, I often had to break up scenes because they wouldn't fit on my card. It is a bit worse now, but not to the degree that I can't use Iray at all, or only smallest scenes work.

It's also worthwhile noting that some sets load with ridiciously high subdivision settings, even clothing. That's also factoring into "straight to CPU".

Have you updated to the latest Nvidia drivers directly from Nvidia's website, or did you update/check using windows update? Windows will always give you older drivers that typically won't work with the most recent version of DS/Iray. It sounds as if you might be using older drivers that won't work,  causing Iray to use the CPU to render.

What is the full version number - Help>About Daz Studio?

  • i am not sure how can i look that up

Yesterday, DimReaper replied to you with the instructions, among how to get info that would help people help you, quoted below.

    2) Load Daz Studio, click the Help menu at the top, then About Daz Studio.  Post here with the version number from the top left corner of the pop-up.

Also, your post title, once again, doesn't mention your problem.

    No.

You don't solve problems by throwing money at em.

Of course you do. And because time is also an important and precious commodity, it can be the better choice. And let's be honest: anything that keeps one focused on the artistic rather than the technical is a good thing. We are supposed to program the computer, not the computer to program us.

    No, you dont.

Why? Because throwing money at an issue means some (maybe all) of it is going to miss it's target, and how much depends on how accurate the data, and the understanding of the data (called information) is.

Yes money can solve an issue, and frequently does, but not by "throwing it."

I've spent a few days learning how to use Diffeomorphic plug in for Blender; I've been a Blender user for years, so no particular learning curve there, but plugins themselves take time.

Whilst time is a commodity, I have some at the moment, and my render times have plumbeted drastically; results are improving too. No cash spent. Time, well that I had in abundance.

So, OP goes and buys a Titan and the issue doesn't go away; what does that tell you?

I posted 4 steps, asking you to carry them out and post back.  By not giving any clear information, you are making it very difficult and frustrating for anyone to help you.

When you keep posting, "I have the latest drivers" that isn't helpful because "the latest drivers" could mean different types of nvidia drivers.  Also, the latest drivers are not always the best ones to use for Daz Studio and there have been conflicts between versions of Daz Studio and versions of nvidia drivers.

You have now posted above that you are using DS version 4.12.0.85.  What is the exact version of nvidia drivers that you now have installed?  Is the graphics card showing up in the render settings and is it ticked?  Can you render a simple primitive?

That version of daz works great if you use older NVIDIA drivers. That is the current public build i am using.

the NVIDIA driver versions after 441.12 is when they changes features making Opitex Prime Acceleration always on so as Richard stated its not really daz so much as it is the NVIDIA drivers causing the fall back, the new versions of daz public build .117 requires the updated gpu drivers to make some of the new features function properly to stablize the daz software.

try rolling back your gpu driver to 436.36 or later.I had to currently roll back to 436.30 and i have zero draw back issues with daz version 4.12.0.85

ok just so you know it doesnt do it to me all the time its only when i bring a room scene into it like a garage or a kitchen  full scene

or if use more then 3 people in the scene the cpu takes over

the drivers iam using is 4587 thats whats it says for a gxt 1070 8gb vram

  • lasagnamanlasagnaman Posts: 1,001

Do you try to reduce textures in your rooms and on your 3 characters? Chances are with the higher size of recent textures and what's already been mentioned by Ivy and others you probably are running the risk of running out of  available VRAM on your card. Reducing the textures is what I'd do to try not to go to cpu. You can try just 2 people and see what happens.

    the driver version 445.87

Good.  So now we have the info that you are on:

    DS version:  4.12.0.85

    Nvidia Drivers: 445.87

Right now, I wouldn't worry too much about utilities like scene optimiser until we can tell for definite that your card is actually working with anything.

    First thing:

Go and download GPU-Z by clicking "Standard Version" on the top left of this page:  https://www.techpowerup.com/download/techpowerup-gpu-z/

The Windows Task Manager doesn't show the card use for rendering by default, so GPU-Z is an easy way to see what your card is doing.

Once you have installed GPU-Z and have it running, you need to click Sensors and you will be looking for "GPU Load" - I've attached a screenshot below.

    Second thing:

With GPU-Z running, load Daz Studio, Click on create > New Primitive > Sphere.

Make sure the sphere is visible on in your scene and then click render.

Please post back here to tell us if the "GPU Load" in GPU-Z went to around 100%, and if the sphere actually renders.

Here's some more things you can do to squeeze your scene inside the available memory (however much you may have):

    • The Resource Saver Shaders Collection for Iray is really useful. If you do nothing else, go to the product page and read all the information on the images, you'll learn a lot about how to optimise your scenes.
    • Hide all the things you can't see. If a character is wearing pants, make their legs invisible in the scene tab. That's a chunk of geometry and texture that you don't have to accommodate in your card.
    • Split your scene up. If you can't render four characters in a scene without dropping to CPU, render the two characters on the left, then the two characters on the right, and combine the results in photoshop or similar. The spot render tool with "New Window" selected in Tool Options is your friend here.

Finally, if your artistic vision encompasses grandiose scenes with lots going on, learn to accept CPU rendering. Set up your scene, start the render, then go and do something else. Too often I see people on this forum saying "I can't render this scene" when what they mean is "I can't render this scene without dropping to CPU." Who cares if it took hours and hours to run if you were asleep/at work/meeting up with friends at the time?

That's because folks confuse the difference between "The Problem" and "Causing Them a Problem"

...anybody remember Reality/Lux (LuxRender was non biased CPU based render engine)?  I do, and reading posts where people mentioned a single render took days not just hours to get to a reasonable level of convergence without noise or "fireflies". The trick is for CPU rendering you need a fast high core count CPU (at least a 16 core Threadripper as that TRs support 4 memory channels instead of 2 [more memory channels is more efficient]), and more than 32 GB of the fastest memory your MB can support (without overclocking) if you are into "epic" scenes, cannot afford a an RTX Quadro 8000, or don't want the process to drop into swap mode.
