how to make this Iray hair look darker?

In pic 1 is the hair I'm using without being rendered in Iray and in pic 2 is the render of the hair in Iray. As you can see it doesn't look 'right' in the Iray render Its lighty greyish and not really dark at all. The surface settings are the default ones  Can anyone give me some surface tool directions on how to make this hair look darker for Iray? what are the most important surface settings to do this with? thx.
