Is Adobe Photoshop Elements acceptible for use with DAZ Studio?

Such as for making skin textures.

I've never made a complex skin texture, but I can't see why PhotoshopElements couldn't do everything necessary to manipulate the images comprising a skin texture.  It's actually quite a nice tool for the money.  I haven't used it since several versions ago, but back then it had two modes of operation.  It had a basic housewife friendly interface and an advanced interface that was more like full photoshop but with some of the fat cut out.

Any recent users of PhotoshopElements able to comment?

I use Photoshop Elements all the time (I have both PSE 9 and PSE 2018 installed). I've never attempted a complex skin texture either, but I often use it for making other textures (as well as the usual postwork).

The main thing lacking is some of the fancier masking and blending options, vector graphics (I have some Ron Deviney products that don't fully work) and the inability to create/update HDRI's (so Daz Studio renders using canvases are not much use). I'm told GIMP can do these, but have not tried yet.

It likely depends on your intention. If you mean to make skin textures from scratch you'll need a decent 3D texturing program. If you are only going to be modifying an existing merchant resource texture set, then Photoshop would probably work ok.

What I'd like to try is create something on the order of an anaconda skin pattern for Genesis 8

Working across seams with patterns is a royal PitA if you are trying to paint on existing UV's.  Not impossible, but you are probably better off using a 3D painting utility to do the skin from scratch rather than trying to paint over the existing maps in 2D.  I haven't used Elements in like 15 years, so I don't know if they ever gave it that capability.

Agreed. I wouldn't try a patterned skin with any 2D paint program.
